san jose's chuck reed is among the mayors who will be there.'s go to anne makovec live at san jose city hall to explain his stand. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. last night during the state of the union we heard about the federal budgeted then there is the state budget and all of these local, city and county budgets and they are all intertwined when you cut from one, it often means cuts to another one. and that is something that a lot of local mayors are standing up to, today we're talking about san jose mayor chuck reed, ed lee the mayor of san francisco, and jean quan, of oakland all headed over to sacramento to confront engineergy about some cuts to the state budget which will affect local funds. now, jerry brown's plan is to shut down about 400 local redevelopment agencies. the same agencies that cities and counties have been counting on to help spur growth which leads to more taxes that they can then collect. the state is also considering shifting billions of dollars in costs to counties everything from the monitoring of pa

nbc reporter met with chuck reed late tonight moments after he returned from sacramento. george, what happened now behind closed doors? did mayor reed share this with you? >> reporter: you know, raj, mayor chuck reed along with san francisco mayor ed lee and gene kwan, they told governor brown if you eliminate the agencies, you eliminate jobs. now, governor brown and the state are looking at a $25 billion deficit. the governor feels one way to cut the deficit is to shut down those redevelopment agencies that would free up close to about $2 billion. but mayor chuck reed says the redevelopment money is really important for san jose in attracting businesses, creating jobs. and he told the governor at this meeting now is not the time to take away that money. the governor told him, dollars will be hard to come by. >> the hallways will be crowded in the coming months of people who say please keep the money coming. and my message is the money is not there. >> we didn't have to explain that to him, but we wanted to impress upon him the importance of this redevelopment funding to

mayor chuck reed held his annual crime and gang prevention summit. today's summit, there are a lot more concerns. even with what's happening this week. let's bring in kimberly terry who joins us from san jose with more. kimberly? >> reporter: last year san jose had its lowest homicide rate in a decade. but this year started off with bloodshed and violence. in san jose, there have been seven homicides in the first three weeks of 2011. >> we're having a terrible month, a tragic month of january. we've had three gang related homicides in this month. >> reporter: the latest happened friday night when san jose police say an 18-year-old was gunned down. police say a 17-year-old suspect has been arrested, and they believe the shooting is gang related. in response, police say they are stepping up gang suppression efforts. saturday a planned crime and gang prevention summit was held at the seven trees community center. the recent spat of violence is a talking point. mayor chuck reed hosted the event. >> we had a spike in the first few weeks of the year. but w

chuck reed is calling on everyone in the city to help tackle the violence. three weeks into this year, san jose has had seven homicides, at least three of those killings are believed to be gang related and the latest happened just last night. >>> we now have the first in a series of national transportation safety board reports on the san bruno pipeline explosion. while the 77 page report does not make any hard and fast conclusions about the cause of the blast, it does say there were dozens of fractures in the wells of the pipeline that exploded. pg&e says all pipelines in its system that are similar in age and size to the san bruno line are being operated at lower pressures to ensure safety. congresswomen jackie spears says that is a good first step. >> it should give us some solace in knowing that because the pressure has been reduced irrespective of the bad wells and the like, we are somewhat protected right now. >> but the congresswomen says she still plans to meet with federal investigators to learn more about the report and what can be done to improve s
