msnbc contributor, chuck rosenberg, former u.s.ttorney and senior fbi official, and dave aronberg, state attorney for palm beach county. dave, take us into what we've seen so far inside the courtroom. this is some intense back and forth, and the judge is not very happy. >> no, they really should have cameras in the courtroom, jose. this is ridiculous. what are they trying to hide? we need a more transparent judicial process because there's going to be so much information spread about what really went on. i know chris kise, trump's lawyer, he was a former solicitor general of florida, well-respected. he is no political hack, so when he gets up and says that donald trump is the former and future president of the united states, he's clearly playing to an audience of one. they know that trump's goose is cooked in this case. he's losing this case in front of judge engoron, they're playing for the appeal. that's what all this stuff is about. >> so how do you play for the appeal when much of this is really about other things? i mean, the

. >> i also want to bring in chuck rosenberg, former u.s. attorney and senior fbi official. chuck, look, he is the same person. the one thing about donald trump is he's been remarkably consistent over the years in believing that he is this person, this sort of aura of a trump golden image that he has created. having said that, so much, as is rightfully pointed out and as i read it was political here. legally what did you hear from inside that courtroom today? >> so he is the same person, chris, but he's in an environment that is not conducive to the type of person he is. it plays well as political theater, but in court it works very differently. one side asks you questions, and you answer them with evidence that's relevant and admissible. and then, in mr. trump's case, if you didn't make the points you wanted to make or you don't feel the right questions were asked, your lawyers get to ask you questions and you answer them with evidence that's relevant and admissible. in other words, there's a procedure, and this man is not very good at procedure. so what did i hear? i heard

i want to bring in chuck rosenberg, former u.s. ll as an msnbc contributor. it's good to see you, chuck. it was just last month, i think, that trump's defense team argued that the special counsel had not provided some of the most basic discovery in the case, and it took four months for other material to be handed over. what's going on here? could this be grounds for the judge delaying the trial? >> possibly. i mean, the government, the prosecutors have an absolute obligation, as you know, chris, to provide information to a defendant so that he or she can prepare their defense. sometimes that process is protracted or cumbersome, particularly so when you have classified information. the trial judge originally set a date for trial for next may, may of 2024, which seems to me and certainly seemed at the time to be completely reasonable. the trump defense team will argue that they need more time, and we'll see whether or not she is willing to grant them more time, but it still seems to me that that trial date should hold. it may not. >>

attorney and senior fbi official and current msnbc contributor, chuck rosenberg. we have talked about the mood in the courtroom, the fact that letitia james is sitting in the front row. one of donald trump's attorneys in the separate hush money case being brought, of course, by the manhattan d.a. could be heard laughing in the second row of the courtroom today as she observed and took notes. first of all, is there something that she could gain by watching this trial? something she could learn by watching donald trump in this? what do you make of the fact that she found it amusing? >> not much of that, chris. laughing in a courtroom is seldom prompt, certainly not from lawyers in the gallery, so what could she learn, what could she gain? theoretically, and i think it's only theoretical, if any lawyer who defending mr. trump in a criminal case is entertaining the idea of putting him on the stand in his own defense, which i think would be ill-advised and generally speaking is extraordinarily rare, they may want to watch and see how he does on the stand. they may also
