congressman, you just heard what a very influential democrat in the house chuck schumer said.says that things are in good enough shape right now in afghanistan that we can make a major withdrawal of our forces from there. where do you come down on that? >> i don't know what he's looking at. i must have missed that particular brief. we are in a very, very precarious place in afghanistan right now. what it seems to me is is there's a political solution that is trying to find a military component to it versus the other way around. we need to apply a military solution to our problem there and then talk about it to the american public. and i think this administration's weakness is they want to have those successes. i think they truly do want to keep america safe but they want to do it politically first and then find the military component. we need to flip that around. they need to be able the come to the american people and explain where we are. if it's 2,000 troops or 5,000 troops we have completely missed the point of what the threat of a safe haven is in afghanistan. >> schieffe

[applause] one of the more amusing aspects of the case was when we had our oral argument in october in the district court in richmond. the federal government's lawyer got up and introduced himself. he said he was for the government, i mean, the federal government. the least anti federalist founding father, alexander hamilton, even noted these courts are here too rapidly these contests of constitutional authority. justice o'connor quoted him all the way back to the new york convention in 1788 in reminding people that the 10th amendment exists and matters and accounts, and she did that

he was an aide to senator chuck schumer before that. he does not have a profession other than the one he has been in. i think that will be a very difficult adjustment for him. >> what is the next step in terms of the politics of it all? what happens now in new york? >> well, once the seat is vacant, and we don't know exactly when weiner will step down, but governor cuomo will have to set a special election, because this term is not really very far along. it's only really been about six months since the last new group of congressmen were inaugurated. there's a year and a half left. this seat, unlike others in new york city is not an overwhelmingly democratic seat. it's definitely leaning democratic, but this is a seat conceivably, especially given the circumstances, that a republican might make a strong run. so it's going to be a very competitive primary here in brooklyn, in queens, on both the democratic and republican sides, and i would say the democrats would be favored, but this is not an automatic win for the democrats in this vacan

i'm proud to introduce chuck schumer. >> well, thank you, and i want to thank my colleagues. you heard the passion and the straight forwardness with which they have spoken. that is because this issue is such an obvious one. we are hitting crunch time in these debt ceiling talks. if we are going to reach a grand bargain, neither side can cling to its ideological positions any longer. the republican leadership is struggling to let go of its sacred cows even though momentum is not on their side. earlier this month, grover norquist took a purist position against any revenues whatsoever. he said not only do tax breaks for millionaires need to be protected, it was also wrong for any republican to roll back any loophole in the tax code no matter how waistful. this approach was so extreme that 34 senate republicans rejected it. earlier this month, 34 senate republicans voted to get rid of ethanol subsidies. this was an outright rejection of the grover-norquist approach to revenues. for some reason, even after that vote, leader mcconnell is trying to resurrects this approach. leader m
