and certainly for chuck schumer, holding on to joe manchin as a member of the democratic party has to be part of that urgency. >> well absolutely lawrence. and i think that the leadership of the democratic party needs to keep their eye on the policy ball. at the american people voted for. and we don't -- i don't even know that it's been mentioned in the segment yet, we're in a pandemic so many of these policies that yes cost money but are paid for, the way the bill is set up, are for a particular reason. it's to allow reason women to get back to work, so that they have affordable childcare to do that. it's to invest into home care, and elder care, and paid family leave. and that's things people need in this moment, but they also needed this before the pandemic. so now the democrats it's not just the urgency of, the midterm elections, but the fact that the american people need this stuff. and they voted for it. so i think that joe manchin, every night that he goes to bed, he needs to think about that mom that's at home, that's not able to go back to work because they can't afford child

chuck schumer knows the history of democratic senators in republican states switching parties, and so since he became the majority leader of the 50/50 senate he has to have devoted some thought every day to keeping joe manchin in the democratic party. publicly joe manchin has always said that he hasn't given a thought to leaving the democratic party, but david corn reports today in "mother jones," quote, in recent days, senator joe manchin has told associates that he is considering leaving the democratic party if president biden and democrats on capitol hill do not agree to his demand to cut the size of the social infrastructure bill from $3.5 trillion to $1.75 trillion. according to people who have heard manchin discuss this, man chin has said that if this were to happen, he would declare himself an american independent, and he has devised a detailed exit strategy for his departure. manchin has discussed bolting from the democratic party, perhaps to place pressure on biden and democrats in these negotiations. he told associates that he has a two-step plan for exiting the party. first

there is a lot of pressure on the president, chuck schumer -- the president and chuck schumer to turn up the heat on people like senator kyrsten sinema. the problem is that the tools at their disposal don't really allow them to do that. there is not much more pressure that can be brought to bear on an individual. when lyndon johnson was majority leader and then-president, he would be able to threaten senators with think that would really scare them, like being taken off key committees or having campaign funds cut or being iced out of power in certain ways. that really does not happen in the modern senate. every senator is a king and queen on their own. it is very difficult to pressure them to do things they don't want to do. i think the president and other democratic leaders are doing everything they can to keep kyrsten sinema at the table. i think this bill will be passed eventually but it is tougher to do -- to try to persuade. host: is there a best way forward for moderate and progresses to come together to hash out these issues internally ? guest: yes, and i think that is essentia

nancy pelosi and chuck schumer's strategy to force through the democrats agenda, they're ready to tryall over again. the speaker and senate majority leader are hustling to clinch a deal as soon as possible on a framework for president joe biden's $2 trillion social spending package. that framework would free up needed progressive votes for a bipartisan infrastructure bill by october 31st. this was the view yesterday of the senate minority leader mitch mcconnell on the democrats' deliberations. >> we've all been fascinated by the stories all of you are filing about the difficulty our democratic friends are having getting everybody in place on this reckless tax and spend proposal. the longer this lays out there, the more unpopular it becomes. i found it particularly interesting was the gallup poll last weekend which indicates how the public mood has shifted from the pandemic year where people felt vulnerable and the government needed to step up and did, i would remind you on a bipartisan basis, but now over half of americans think the government is doing too many things, too many things
