let me turn to chuck todd, moderator of "meet the press." that was a fascinating number, 42% of republicans support this muslim immigration plan he's put forward. what does that say to his republican challengers who have been condemning him on this? >> it is a divided electorate. i would say there is some question. i wouldn't ignore the fact that there was a fairly large undecided number on this. larger than you normally would expect on something that got this much coverage. it's over 15%, between 15% and 20%. this was a live poll. there may be more people that support trump's position but don't necessarily want to tell somebody over the phone when we do these polls that they're for him. there is one other thing in this poll i think is good news for donald trump. 77% of republicans say that they appreciate or like the way he tells it like it is, even at some points if he does it inelegantly. a lot of people in this party like donald trump is bringing up issues. >> chuck todd, thank you. >>> the shock waves of last month's terrorist attacks c

i'm steve kornacki in for chuck todd.e have brand-new nbc news/"wall street journal" poll numbers, just out as of 5:00 p.m. eastern time. they show that terrorism and national security are now the american public's number one concern. after san bernardino, 40% of americans say that national security and terrorism should be the top priority for the federal government. that is up 19 points. doubling essentially since april. again, 19 points since just this spring. job creation and economic growth. meanwhile, these were the nations top concerns in the spring. now they amount to only the top concern for 23% of americans. that's a six-point drop since the spring. and there's a significant part swran divide to these numbers. 58% of republicans say that national security and terrorism are their top concerns. that's compared to 26% of democrats. and 33% of democrats call the economy their top issue. compared to just 12% of republicans. the renewed focus on security and terrorism is changing the 2016 race. and it's pulling preside

i'm steve kornacki in for chuck todd. the leading republican candidate for the white house is a billionaire businessman who has yet to really break into his own bank. but that could all change very soon. >> starting around january 4th, we're spending a lot of money. we're going out and spending a lot. we don't want to take any chances. we're too close. >> that's a significant story, if it actually happens. we have heard talk like this before from trump. the last time he made this kind of noise, all he ended up doing was putting up a few radio ads in iowa and south carolina. so far, trump has essentially spent nothing on a campaign where he holds almost 40% of republican support nationwide. it's not just data either. it's a talking point for his campaign. >> i loved the concept of saying, i spent the least and i'm the best result. because that's what it's all about. think of the country. he spent the least and he got the best result. other guys like bush, he spent $59 million and he's in the dog house. think of it, right?
