rachel maddow, chuck todd, still with me. so rachel, on the democratic side.ewed both of these candidates tonight. here's what jumped out at me from these two interviews. we talk about donald trump and these comments. there's so much discussion about media's coverage of donald trump, is it too much, are they covering him the wrong way? this was really interesting to me, because this subject came up. you asked him about donald trump's abortion comments. you asked hillary clinton. hillary clinton, it seems, went out of her way in her answer to you to say, this is something the press needs to be covering, they need to be pressing him on this, getting out there on what he says on this. you ask the same thing to bernie sanders and he says, eh, the press should mention this, but this is just a stupid thing donald trump says. basically, he's saying, focus on something else. two very different views of what the significance of this. >> and actually, it happened, chronological chronologically, in the reverse order. because i ended up having this interview with hillary

our chuck todd sitting down with senator cruz, and with me now is ken cuccinelli. he is president of the researchers fund. ken, it's good to have you with me and we all looked at this "washington post" article detailing the cruz strategy. a big two weeks for donald trump. you're now the cruz campaign delegate wrangler for the july convention. if trump doesn't get the nomination on the first ballot, are you confident that the work you're doing now will get it for ted cruz on the second ballot? >> if one of the strengths of ted's campaign is he has built -- because it's a conservative-based campaign, it's bprinciples based, he's ben able to serve local and conventional level as we head out to cleveland. when you build a grassroots organization, that's what ted cruz has done, and it's serving him very well. it's why we swept colorado, we did very well in north dakota, we're poised to do well in wyoming this weekend, and this is one race at a time. all donald can do is whine about it instead of compete because he's just being crushed competitively by the cruz grassroot

down to chuck todd. chuck? >> i just for the longest time and nicole and i i would have this conversation week after week. we'd talk about donald trump is is winning, but can't get over 50%. we're not talking about him getting over 60% in multiple states tonight. probably over 50% in our five states tonight. that's a big deal. we're going to, i think we're going to look back on tonight and say it was the beginning of the end of this primary battle because trump is doing a whole heck of a lot better than anybody projected he would do on this night just five weeks ago. i had an operative swear to me about a month ago, we can hold trump under 1,000 delegates by the end of this primary season. my gosh, he could be at 11,000 by the middle of may. we're already at 900 now after what we've projected the delegates we've awarded him just based op the projectioned we've made in three primary states. he could get close to 950. you know, i'm just trying to understand how indiana is going to make up all that ground. trump h

chuck todd is in center city philadelphia. a stones throw away from that building right there. chuck, what a battleground you're in now. set the scene for us. >> i will. i feel like i didn't do chris matthews justice if i didn't say you do get goose bumps when you're walking around the square and you realize democracy was born here, and now we're having to report on what some people think is a perversion of democracy, which is the way we select our president in various weird nominating ways and all of that. that's why we're here in philadelphia because pennsylvania is sort of a multi-levels. it's like three dimensional chess. pennsylvania is home to these n infamous and unbound voters. the voters don't know, unless somebody told them, if the delegate has pledged support to somebody. these 54 people, may be more important tonight than the actual candidates themselves at some point. these 54 unbound delegates are going to be -- we're going to be tracking them in ways we've probably never tracked this modern era when it comes to what matters in this nominating process and all that.

chuck todd joins us now. think mark halperin was making this point a few minutes ago, but in many ways, this may be a preview of donald trump as the republican nominee. a lot of political events for the rest of this political calendar. >> no, that's what i think we are getting a taste of what it's going to be like. on the one hand, there's always protesters that come along with any polarizing political figure in our country. but obviously, with trump it goes into an nth degree. now, let's remember, this is california. i have a feeling that trump will get a lot of protesting in california, the largest group of mexican americans, more than any others that he has disparaged more than any other group. so i think that -- so i'm not surprised that he's going to have a lot of protesters when he shows up in california. so i have a feeling, the next month you're going to see this. once june 8th comes along, steve, we're not going to see him land in california for the rest of the campaign. because i think california, u

. >> chuck todd, that's the democratic race for now. let's talk republicans and back to steve at the board. the big question on trump tonight, public polling had him as the victor going into this was the delegate math. what did he emerge with? >> the dream for trump tonight would be to get all 95. let's break this down. he's hit 50% statewide. he gets 14 for then. then 27 congressional drirtistr. where is he in trouble right now. it's this pocket here. starts in albany. all of these districts, he's right around -- i hope this doesn't look like it. i got in trouble last week. >> it looks like a boot. >> it's the shoe. these districts right here, he is right at the 50% line. it could go either way right now. so if he clears 50% in these districts, it's three in each one of them. if he falls short he's going to lose a delegate to john kasich and down here, new york city there are a couple of problem areas for him. there's a district that straddles manhattan and brooklyn, they're both under 50. there's a second one on the upper east side he
