chuck todd, one hit wonders for 40, that's a stunning look at the map. and of course he's right. you know the map as well as anyone, but here we slide into general election territory. >> no, we do. it strikes me, there's another way to look what the general election will be about which is gut politics versus identity politics. right, the clinton campaign and the democratic party based on what obama did in 2012 is mechanically ready to run, probably circles around the republican party in trump's campaign in the identity politics idea of being able to talk to hispanic voters in colorado, single women in virginia. you know, hitting different sub constituency groups within a swing state. donald trump is not going to run that kind of campaign at all. he's going to run a campaign on sort of your gut feeling. that's what his campaign has been about until now and what the general is going to be about. i think this is going to be an interesting -- obviously trump's got to do -- figure out how to do some targeting and improve with some constituency groups. particularly women. but hillary c

let's bring in our political director, moderator of "meet the press," chuck todd. chuck, there's word tonight that hillary clinton's fund-raising team is targeting gop donors in new york. it's almost stop trump 2.0. what do you make about this and what it says about where we are in this race? >> i think what it says is, this has been a rough 48 hours for donald trump. when he became the presumptive nominee when john kasich dropped out, when you look back at past moments like that, mitt romney, john mccain, george w. bush, there was more euphoria in the party at that moment. there's been nothing but that. and there's a reason that party unity matters, lester. it's pretty simple, and it's this. the party that's most united wins general elections. period. we can go back to the '60s, and the party that was more united won. the party fighting with each other lost. and right now it's the republicans that are still fighting. >> all right. chuck, much more in all this, sunday morning with you on "meet the press." thanks. >>> there are troubling signs of firefighters losing

we are joined by our political director, moderator of "meet the press" chuck todd. chuck, what does the poll tell us? >> kate, the biggest way to look at initial head-to-heads when you look at it, our first major general election test with one presumptive nominee and other likely nominee is that republicans are rallying around trump a lot faster than democrats are rallying around clinton. that's the easiest way to explain how a double digit lead for clinton last month is suddenly done to 3 points. but the other significant finding in this poll is this -- as you know, both trump and clinton have unusually high unfavorable ratings. get this -- one in five of respondents in our poll have unfavorable views of both trump and clinton. this is the swing vote in this election, kate. these folks are going to determine who is going to become president. right now most of them would like to see bernie sanders as president. and when you ask them, which way do they lean now? a slight plurality lean trump. a good chunk prefer neither, none of the above, third candidate. what the vo
