who are the potential successors to chuck hagel? to look at people who have served in the department previously. stand a decent chance of being confirmed relatively easily because they've served before. one of the names is ashton carter, deputy secretary of defense. he was bypassed in favor of chuck hagel. someone who has respect from both sides of the aisle. a lot of bloomberg folks know him because he was the chief weapons buyer at the pentagon for several years. the other name is michele flournoy, she was director of policy and she stepped down as under secretary a couple months back. her name has been mentioned as someone who is close to the president and close to the white house decision-makers on national security. in that sense, she would be closer to the inner circle then chuck hagel was ever able to reach. you will see other names as well. consider confirmation being one of the bigger challenges given the limited time remaining in congress and republicans taking control in january. >> no question it should be easier for some

chris, last week vice president biden said he was ticked off how the president forced out chuck hagel whoby the way happens to be a long time senate colleague of his. i don't think he was very happy with that decision. what does it say about the disconnect between the president and his staff to push out hagel after less than two years appointing him to the position? >> i mean, listen, some of this is the normal course of events in d.c., administration's will have certain changes they'll make in cabinet positions and you obviously saw with president bush, secretary rumsfeld was resigned or pushed out depending on how you want to define it, following the mid-term elections during president bush's second term. i always thought personally it was kind of an odd fit. i like secretary hagel personally but it just didn't seem to be a relationship that kind of clicked. now, i will say that there are -- there are clearly tensions in every white house between the white house staff and the cabinet. you may argue one way or the other. it may be more so administration. i don't see it that way. i think

. >> rose: let's just talk first about the resignation of chuck hagel, who i interviewed last week, andthen he resigned. >> was there a relationship between that, do you think? >> rose: no, i don't. although, it's been suggested to me that, you know, clearly secretary hagel had it on his mind, the resignation, at that time, and it didn't just happen between that interview and the moment that he felt compelled to resign. help us understand it. >> well, it's difficult from the outside. secretary haig expel the president have a long-term and close relationship. >> rose: from the senate. >> from the senate. they were close to each other as senators. they traveled together. >> rose: sat on the senate foreign relations committee and went to israel together. >> yes, secretary hagel had an impact on then-senator obama's thinking and they became close friends and remain close friends. so it's difficult to penetrate those conversations. in their conversations they go both ways from the perspective of the secretary of defense and the perspective of the president. >> rose: what's interesting is the
