i'm fine with that, i'm streatham's chuka umunna.and nor will there be or should there be. should be in the nearfuture? would you likejeremy corbyn to stand as the leader in the next election? i don't get to determine that. the membership have been very clear. i'm certainly not arguing for anything different and it's highly unlikely i should become the leader of the labour party any time soon. or ever, for that fact. you could stand. it's not about me really. i'm in it because i am trying to change the country and change the world and if you're not in politics for that reason, get out. chuka umunna, thank you for coming on hardtalk. thank you very much for having me, lovely. hello there, good morning. in wales, it's just been the warmest day of the year so far. here, 27 degrees. in scotland, we had some slow—moving, thundery downpours yesterday, bringing some flash—flooding. and, across the southern half of the uk, much more cloud, and there's sufficient cloud over the next few days to bring the chance of one or two heavy and perhaps

my guess is that prominent pro—eu campaigner, chuka umunna.n to be a part of the european economic area, just like norway. but is he going against the spirit of brexit while also being disloyal to his own party leadership question mark ——7 chuka umunna, welcome. this new amendment would give britain full access to the single market. surely that is what you want, why not supported 7 i surely that is what you want, why not supported? i will be voting for the labour amendment as we call it here in britain but also voting for a cross—party amendment supported by a cross—party amendment supported by a number of parties in our house of commons which sought to keep us in what is called the european economic area. that is the only way you can have genuinely free access and be a pa rt have genuinely free access and be a part of the framework of standards that help consumers, the environment, employees. that is the only way to do it. the intention behind the amendment is not a bad one but you cannot actually achieve the jet unless you remain in the euro

joining me now from central lobby at the houses of parliament is labour mp chuka umunna.bers of the labour party putting their roles to vote against the labour leader? first of all, it's worth noting that on our current estimates, i think three conservative mps voted for the lords eea amendment. around 8—10 and stayed, so that would represent the biggest government rebellion potentially on this bill to date, which i think is very significant —— abstained. we have had a very important debate on these amendments in the commons today, because of course although the majority of people in a referendum in 2016 voted to leave, it was retained to parliament to determine how we leave. and what you have seen in the debate today is a desire to take heed and listen to all the views of all our different communities. a gave a speech myself on free movement and some people's feelings on that. but also, have to take account of that, but also ensure that we leave in the least damaging way to our economy. i'm very honest about this, i personally don't think we should be leaving the europea

i've been discussing the amendment with the labour mp chuka umunna.eaving it all. i think the better thing would be for us to remain members of the european union. but the least worst options, if we are to leave the european union, are for us to continue to fully participate in the eu's customs union and also the european economic area. now, labour's position is for us to have a customs union with the european union. but at the moment, our position is not for us to continue to fully participate in the european economic area. and being part of both of those entities is the only way that we can continue to have the economic benefits as much as possible that we enjoy as members of the european union once we have left. i mean, you say this is the "best worst—case scenario", but for those people who voted for brexit, they'll say that this is a complete sell—out. being a member of the eea, it's clear, isn't it? it's the four freedoms — goods, services, capital and people. and that was a big part of the brexit vote for the people who wanted to leave the euro
