angela chung, she's with the berkeley seismology project. thank you for joining us.ant start by asking you how close to the san andreas fault did this quake hit? >> unfortunately, i don't have the information how close it hit. but they're kind of gem. i'm not sure what you're looking at but from what i can see it's off the fault looks like by a few kilometers but it's near the san andreas fault there. >> talk for people who may not be familiar with the science what happens the closer an earth quake occurs near that fault line. >> so when there's -- there is an example of these plates that move by and there are some sections where we have large faults such as the san andreas fault. that fault stretches up from northern california all the way down to southern california. that's a really large fault. there are many, many, many smaller faults that are all over the place on the west coast, particularly in california what we see is near the san andreas fault there are actually other different lengths. as you might imagine, the larger faults are capable of bigger earthquake
