tonight ciattarelli now trailing by 46 1/2. that's an improvement for ciattarelli.up 16 points statewide in new jersey. joe biden won this state by 16 points over donald trump. essex county, it is one of the biggies in new jersey. and for democrats it is the biggest. and for phil murphy here there's some slippage here, but perhaps ciattarelli would have wanted a little more slippage because again, there are some other areas here in the state where ciattarelli has made some inroads. we've talked about them in hunterdon. we've talked about them in ocean county and in monmouth county. he needs to make significant inroads too in these big vote-producing areas. so essex county now, we have a much clearer sense of -- and ciattarelli cutting into that deficit that trump faced but not by the margin necessarily he might need statewide. but we want to see if we can make up for it elsewhere. bergen county really looming as one of the big ones right now. ciattarelli leading by five points right here. again, this would be a significant jump for ciattarelli over trump. we are sti

ciattarelli may be able to put 20,000 right back on the board here. again we're just going to try to confirm what they put up on their website there. in sussex county, the clerks office there. that could be a 20,000 vote gain for ciattarelli if that information is correct. what else are we looking at here. we think mercer county, this is one that phil murphy is going to put a lot of faith and i think rain. now mercer county where trump and, is the state, capital you see this is a big democratic county, tonight it's only 15, but that's in part because what you're seeing right, here does not reflect the vote by mail. again we just showed you in bergen county, an example of how heavily democratic the vote by mail can be. in mercer county, with the vote by mail, there's an opportunity there, for phil murphy, to make more gains, we're also waiting on vote by mail. we believe in burlington county. getting into south jersey, here we think there is a vote by mail here, likely that's going to help phil murphy, also maybe some same day vote election day votes.

ciattarelli got back in sussex county.s good news for ciattarelli. keeps him ahead by over 20, 000, votes about a point statewide. potentially with the bad news for ciattarelli in making this such a complicated puzzle is. we are trying to piece together, specifically where there is outstanding vote by mail, i think you just saw in bergen, county again bergen county is now, blue it was red most of the night, what happened was we got vote by mail and murphy won it, by upwards of 22,000 votes. just overwhelming democratic strengthen the vote by mail. we see it all over the place. now more batches of murphy vote like that? left in some of these counties? there are a couple places where we have reason to suspect, that may be the case. starting right here, i think we've been talking about this the state capitol area. this is princeton that's around here. union township. trump and obviously. right now murphy is leading by 15 points. that would be a shocker if murphy only won mercer county by 15 points. you see this is just an ext

ciattarelli started way behind and murphy started way ahead slowly, ciattarelli has been closing the gap. my own feeling is that if the election had been held one week ago or two weeks ago, ciattarelli would have lost a good margin. if it was less dumb it next week, i think he would win. ciattarelli deserves a lot of credit for the campaign herein. >> neil: the counties and the ones that we are waiting on our democratic strongholds. they feel that the government will this one out. what you think question rick >> they've lost legislative seats in the flossed local seats. it has been a good night for republicans. >> right now, through the new jersey senate seat, he is trailing to a conservative truc driver. we make that? >> that's a major trend line it really is. it's incredible. i understand what is happening in virginia and that's probably because are salivating that. have it happen new jersey is pretty special. this is a very blue state and have a turnaround like this is very good sign for republicans in a very bad sign for democrats. >> neil: what you think made it difficult for th

ciattarelli is outpacing donald trump. we're seeing extremely high turnout in ocean county. that's something for the republicans to smile at too. ciattarelli's doing a lot of things in these counties i'm showing you to make this a very competitive race statewide. but i've got to see -- in bergen and burlington the question is the mail vote. we've got to see what bergen and burlington look like when we actually have the core democratic vote counted there. and then we've got to see the same-day vote in a place like essex county to see if ciattarelli can land somewhere much better than he's running right now in essex county. when you can get a county in like a bergen or an essex or a burlington, something like that, if you can get all the vote in one of those counties and ciattarelli's doing in one of them something like he's doing in a hunterdon county or a monmouth county, then it's game on. so my curiosity is absolutely piqued here, but i want to see. i want to see something outside of one of these sort of traditionally re

he and jack ciattarelli are neck and neck. less than 100 votes separate them.rginia, the next governor will be a republican. glenn youngkin has defeated the former governor terry mcauliffe. it is a state joe biden won easily in last year's presidential election. we'll keep an eye on those numbers there. >>> now, just a few days into the high stakes climate summit in glasgow and we've seen dozens of nations sign off on several agreements aimed at tackling the climate crisis. another day of meetings will soon be underway, and the uk is set to announce plans to become the world's first net zero financial center. as part of the proposal uk financial institutions and listed companies will be required to publish plans on how they reduce their contribution to global warming. well, that announcement is just one of the pledges coming out of cop-26 in glasgow. on tuesday, dozens of nations agreed to cut methane emissions by 30% from 2020 levels by the end of the decade. the british prime minister says there is still plenty more work to do, though. take a listen. >> we mu

how much did they spend on ciattarelli.s outside the stat of new jersey, less than 3 million. what a disparity that is. you think how could you do so well in statewide ballot. it almost started to think whil people were in that familiar with ciattarelli, who were they voting for. in all likelihood in new jersey they were checking the arm box when it they went into the polling station yesterday. i see your hand up, go ahead. >> at think that's a big part o it. i think they wanted something different. a lot of people would come up and say how do i pronounce his last name and they would say we just call him jack. i don't know if somebody was listening, but there were signs all over the state that said vote for jack. if his name was on the sign he' a lot easier to remember then this. >> you can spend $3 million on an aunt if you take a quote fro the other guy who says if taxes aren't your thing it, this stat of new jersey is not for you. a lot of people said wait a minute, where all tax, how did that work out. >> i don't think

he's now above ciattarelli's number. one big one i know we are waiting on is right here in mercer county. this is a pretty good-sized county, where trenton, the state capital is. you can see it's a democratic county. and we are waiting on a couple of things here. one is the vote by mail. so that vote by mail in mercer county, you expect to just be overwhelmingly democratic in murphy. get a lot of votes out of that. also, i think there's some same-day vote that was cast yesterday on election day, also left in mercer county. we'll see if we can get more of the vote out of there. if murphy gets what we could expect there, that would push that statewide lead up past 10,000, 15,000, somewhere in that neighborhood, maybe even higher. then it's just a question of where else on this map are there other batches of votes. and i have to say, one thing that has united republicans and democrats in talking to them in new jersey, trying to get a sense of this is, they are confused and frustrating at the reporting, making it very unclea

clearly a jab at his opponent, jack ciattarelli.not the evening that murphy was hoping for. at least for the time being, they believe that in the end, they are going to pull this one out. don? >> m.j., thank you very much. from new jersey, a closely watched race. one happening now in virginia -- it's over. we go to chantilly, virginia. glenn youngkin finished speaking and talking about his plans for day one. a very rousing speech, as a matter of fact. >> yes, it was. republicans who have long felt that the governor's mansion was out of reach, just related tonight, con. and youngkin reached out to broad problems. he appealed to moderates and trump voters and appealed to some disaffected democrats. he was able to peel away some folks who said, there's been more than a decade of democrats in the governor's mansion. and i don't believe they are delivering for the state. he was palatable to enough voters to pull out a victory here. it's worth noting, that in the last several weeks, the issue of critical race theory, even though it's not

you would think 43 ciattarelli would do well in ocean county. up here in monmouth county as well way above 60 percent good number for him. i think one of the more telling things is bergen county. he has got a five-point edge right now as it stands here at 12:40 a.m. east coast time and going back four years ago when that same place, you see it again. back to 2021, he pulled the trick in these places appear in sussex, or more of the vote has come and, a little bit, 1200 votes here, 2,000 down here, yo would expect the republican to win there, but in that particular county, but that is where we are, shannon and we don't have a winner in new jersey. gig at think we might have some other news and another states. it's now official. fox news is calling the virgini governor's race or republican glenn youngkin. it has been a hard-fought long battle here. the pulling last week finally showed us that the likely voter we're going to search for youngkin. it looked like he close strong. what you think finally got him over the top. >> it's official. the fox n

okay, ciattarelli is ahead, but how much vote by mail was left?usion on that front too. also there were some issues, it appears, at some of the polling places. one issue in particular i think today that slowed things up was in essex county, around newark right there. there's basically 56 precincts in essex county, heavily democratic essex county, where the voting machines are now essentially impounded because there was some kind of an issue at the polling place. the county clerk says he's got to get a court order now to get the machines back, to have them counted. he was a little vague about what it was, he said it was an issue involving poll workers. but basically now there's a whole process to get those machines back and get everything counted from them. again, there would have been a big batch of votes there from essex county, likely would have been a very pro murphy batch, might have sped things up too. so a couple of things all happening at once. >> on that point, particularly what you were describing in newark, do you expect there will be a

ciattarelli, 49.6% of the vote, phil murphy, 49.5% of the vote. 30% of the vote in, but ciattarelli hasaying, wow, look at that. we're going to count the votes and go to the very end, and we rule nothing out. that's why we do math and that's why we count votes. where do those votes come from. they're 80% here, you look where the red is. if you go to the traditional blue, i haven't hit trenton or mercy county. phil murphy, 53 if you round up, 64, so we watch that, right? if you pull back out and look, that's 2017. we come back to where we are now. a narrow lead for the republican right now, again, on a night where democrats are already nervous, very nervous, good reason to be nervous about virginia or more, you're going to look at this and think, oh, my. my guess is when we start to count more votes from 18% here and 19% here and 5% here, these are democratic strongholds. that's why we count votes. >> a democratic governor has not been reelected in the state of new jersey since the 1970s, both previous democratic governors did not win re-election. we'll see what happens. only 31% of the

that's bad news for ciattarelli. he's already exceeded expectations but murphy's lead has been slowly climbing throughout the day today. the reason is because we've been getting vote batches in from some pretty heavily democratic places. just within the last hour, for instance, here in mercer county, they released their vote by mail, it was about 25,000 votes. murphy won nearly 20,000 of those votes. it's a big reason why he has that margin he has statewide right now. the problem for ciattarelli, what murphy has going for him right now, as you look, where else are there votes in new jersey. essex county is one big source, this is the king of democratic counties in new jersey. what's left in essex county? there are 56 precincts in essex county that have yet to report their votes. there are some issues there. but the precincts are in some of the most extremely democratic cities and towns within what is a very democratic county to begin with. so murphy going to bank some more votes in essex county. paterson, passaic cou

not as many votes there, so chit r rell ciattarelli wants to chip away there, it might be hard there. let's talk about virginia, the state where we know who the winner is. cnn is projecting that glenn youngkin will be the next governor of virginia. a lot of focus has been on the suburban areas, the areas surrounding washington, d.c., fairfax and loudon county, and also the area surrounding richmond, virginia. and in these suburban areas, glenn youngkin the republican did well, trailing terry mcauliffe by 11% there. if you compare that to how joe biden did, in that county, just one year ago, you can see biden won by 25 points. so glenn youngkin had shrunk that margin there, pretty substantially. and that matters. but there is something i want to point out here, when you're talking about the margins, yes, glenn youngkin did better in the suburbs than republicans had in the past, but his big pickups were in different areas. i want to compare his victory to the last gubernatorial race won by the democrat ralph northam. these are the counties where terry mcauliffe did worse, more than five

jack ciattarelli 61%. in some areas it's very democratic where the votes still need to be tabulated. >> we can think right when you were coming on air. it was like a 61-vote difference between the two. and part of this whole picture is a big swing just one year later than joe biden saw. >> let me do this right. how big of a swing in phil murphy is leading by 7100 votes. how much did joe biden win? yes, i did it right. 700,000 votes! there is a big difference between 7,000 and 700,000. kate. let me go back to the governor's race here so i can sort of tell you county by county where jack ciattarelli is doing better than donald trump or worse than joe biden. take monmouth, jack is at 61% of the vote there. this is a cony that donald trump won by only 2%. so he is up 24% donald trump by 26789 if you go county by county, skwak ciattarelli up by is vs.. donald trump by 4. he is vastly over-performing donald trump in a lot of the republican areas. phil murphy is more or less on pace with the democratic areas. he

garden state of new jersey, governor murphy in a dead heat with his republican challenger jack ciattarelli and this is when we will be watching for the next several days. jason chaffetz joining us and leslie marshall, another fox news contributor and democratic strategists which i took a look at those numbers and when you are talking a margin of less than 2000 votes reminds me in some ways of election night 2016 when you were just watching every last vote come in. are you surprised as most people are to see this race so close from the garden state? >> yes, going into this, governor murphy was 9 percentage points ahead and if he does pull this off and i think he will although it will be very close, much closer than i feel comfortable with, that is a call to democrats. i said this before and wrote it in my piece for fox, whether mcauliffe lost virginia or won virginia, if you win, by a very tight margin and either party knows this it is a red flag. there is an alarm that goes out and you've got to say what did we do wrong, what can we do better, how do we not repeat this and that is the same

the democratic incumbent phil murphy narrowly leading his republican challenger, jack ciattarelli. mj, this was certainly a lot closer than a lot of people thought. >> reporter: yeah, that's absolutely right, anderson. certainly, a lot closer than what phil murphy and his campaign and democrats had hoped to see. the latest update right now from here asbury park, new jersey, is that the murphy campaign has announced just within the last hour that he plans on giving a speech tonight at around 10:00 in the building behind me. this is where the election-night party was held last night and this is where they had hoped to give a victory speech last night. the reason that they are doing that is because some other outlets have called the race for phil murphy but i want to be very clear, cnn has not made a call at this moment on who is going to be projected the winner of this race. but already, we are hearing in conversations we have had today with murphy advisers and aides and other democrats, they are doing some soul searching right now to try to figure out why this race has been so much

it's not just that ciattarelli got 68% of the vote here.lli got out of here, chris christie won this county, it was one of the big reasons chris christie got elected governor in 2009. ciattarelli got more votes out of this county than chris christie did. we saw this coming in last night, we said, holy cow, ciattarelli might have a chance statewide. a couple of these counties in south jersey, that enthusiasm and turnout was so high for republicans in fact that the state senate president here, a democrat, looks like he's going to go down to defeat, losing to a republican candidate who spent a grand total of $161 on his campaign because of that republican tide in some of these areas. >> steve kornacki at the big board, thank you so much. >>> that's the big news out of new jersey tonight. turning to what happened in washington, dc today, the supreme court heard arguments about whether to keep new york state's strict gun restrictions that require gun owners to obtain a special license to carry a gun outside the home. the conservative majority on

and ciattarelli called murphy too liberal, to progressive.says not right for new jersey, specifically talking about the school curriculum and some of the parental control issues that we've seen erupting can school board as cross the nation. ciattarelli in some of the debates pointed differences with teaching sex ed to sixth graders and bringing some of these issues in to kindergarteners and the curriculum that's being taught in the public schools here in this state. of course, the democrat it's have an edge, they have a 1 million voter edge over republicans here. phil murphy won his election four years ago by 14% of the vote. he carried the garden state by 16%. no one, sean, no one expected this race to be as close as it is tonight. some of those same issues that we've seen potentially bringing republicans to victory and virginia and the commonwealth there being seems repeated tonight in the garden state but still early but seems at least those republican candidates are trying to get some themes and hammer away on issues that resonate at the

ciattarelli has gotten extremely close to murphy here. can he get past him with the vote that's left in new jersey? that's where it's tricky for ciattarelli. what do we know about what's left in jersey? i'll give you a couple things we do know. right here, essex county, one of the biggest counties in the state, this is where the democrats typically get their biggest plurality in any election. it's right around newark. there's about 56 precincts that are left to report in essex county. they had all sorts of issues apparently with the voting machines there yesterday. the county clerk is indicating it won't be until tomorrow maybe that you get those numbers out of essex county. but again, you can see this is such a heavily democratic county. and, in fact, the communities in particular where these precincts are, are the most democratic cities within this democratic county. so murphy figures to get more out of essex county before all is said and done. we are also waiting on some vote down here, other end of the state. south jersey near philade

so even if governor murphy is reelected, if ciattarelli is able to narrow that margin, they say that is a loud message from voters here in this very blue state. neil. neil: lydia, thank you very much for that. lydia hu. one common theme you're seeing in the reports getting out of virginia, certainly reports out of new jersey is tying whoever the democratic opponent is to right now donald trump. in other words each democratic candidate is using donald trump as a wedge for the republican challenger to say it worked successfully in california in gavin newsom's recall election where he pinned almost donald trump as if he was running against him than any republican. is that going to be disrupted here? is that going to be one of the things they talk about later after all of the results are in? tom bevan with "real clear politics," the cofounder. tom, it worked for gavin newsom. it remains to be seen whether it will work in virginia or certainly new jersey where it is more of an uphill battle but what do you make of howe that strategy is working? >> well i don't think it is working. part of
