right now we want to go live to cierra johnson live in vacaville this morning. cierra? >> good morning. very sad news and speaks to how dangerous the situation is. i heard kris mentioning some of those embers spreading and making those hot spots. that's exactly what we have here on 80 on the westbound side and we've seen these hot spots just continue to travel along that median. this after last night the fire jumped from the west side to the east side of this freeway. now, the fire has been raging for days now and the folks here still working to evacuate. we have some video from the overnight hours. this incredible scene there really just a fire storm in vacaville. we learned there are about 170 structures that were destroyed because of that fire. 50 more were damaged. at last count, 120,000 acres throughout napa, solano and cal fire saying this is at 0% containment. take a listen to what one family that did have to evacuate had to say about this entire situation. >> it's just terrible. what else is going to be next this year? >> it's terrible. but we also think they're

"today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live for us in healdsburg sitting directly in fire zone, cierra. >> reporter: folks here do have mixed emotions. to start with that lightning and thunder we were talking about that extended that evacuation notice, it didn't exactly materialize like many folks thought it would. that warning has been going on since last wednesday. combine that with additional aid that's coming in. it seems you would have a better footing on the fire. the owner, john hawley, says he can still see the smoke in the distance and was able to see the flames. he sent video of what he was seeing. at some point he was seeing the planes coming and dropping off water and was able to see some of the personnel going back and forth to help knock down that blaze. what he was reiterating this all comes at a difficult time. not only is it harvest but is a global pandemic. are the wineries getting as much business because of restaurants closed. he was talking off camera to us that this is a difficult time. he is in a safe area but could see what was going on. at some point he said it

"today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live from vacaville right now where the fires took off and so did the people. many forced to evacuate. >> reporter: good morning. exactly. behind me you can't see the flames as brightly as you have been able to in the last hour but the fire still burning out here. we have seen folks on the side of the road man to dev moving a burning quickly. we have had a photographer on the scene overnight gathering that video and getting the stories and spoke with folks burned trying to escape the fire and heard people gathering the belongings, taking photographs of the inside and outside and belongings to document what they have in case there is any damage from this fire. it is important to note that this all stems from the lightning that we had a couple days ago, that lightning struck some very dry brush creating this fire and that's where we are right now. take a listen to someone working to escape this fire here in i've never evacuated before. but -- >> why this time? >> because it was -- it was coming hard and fast and winds probably 45 miles per hour

"today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live with how conditions are looking there so far this morning. cierra? >> reporter: yes, good morning. those evacuation warnings came last wednesday. it was because of that threat of the high wind and today those warnings are still in effect because of wind and now the added possibility of lightning and thunder. we want to break down how things stand here in healdsburg. now the walbridge fire impacting folks here has burned about 52,000 acres and as you know the fire is part of a larger lnu lightning complex fire burning throughout other counties. cal fire said this is 5% contained, up from not being contained at all on friday. crews attacked the fire from above and also worked on the ground to defend the homes but, of course, winds made that very difficult to do. now the evacuation orders were given to many residents on the west side of 101, and this morning concern those flames don't jump the highway like they've seen happen in other places is a concern. one healdsburg woman expressed her concerns about just that happening. >> it could blow ov

first, cierra johnson is live in oakland this morning. the scene of really tense protests overnight and a lot of cleaning up this morning, cierra. >> yes, good morning. those protests quickly grew in size and just as fast turned violent. this was the result this morning you can see crews are working to completely break this window only to board it up. we've been out for about two hours now and they've made pretty good progress and this is what was left from those protesters. graffiti on the wall. broken windows. it doesn't appear anything has been stolen but there is a lot of financial damage done because of the glass. the fine chardz of glass that are within that building. now, according to oakland pd the protest began around 8:00 last night and within an hour they believe agitators within that crowd tried to set businesses near lake merritt on fire and throwing thicks sthings at off. shut down in both directions because of protesters and windows were broken at the alameda superior court and a fire was started inside. a car was also found

"today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live to explain what this means for counties already on e state's watch list. business that is are now in limbo. cierra? >> reporter: yes, good morning. when the state announced those latest covid cases they were presented with a caveat. those cases are actually higher than they appear because of an ongoing data glitch. and with that glitch the state is now freezing that state watch list so no new counties are being added or are coming off of the list. it is made up of counties that did not meet one of -- any of six metrics including case rates above 10 per 10,000 people over a 14-day period or a hospital increase of 10% or more over three days. every county currently on the list are required to force gym ts, malls to close. with the current glitch those counties are not coming off of that list despite the fact "the mercury news" is reporting they are inching closer to being able to fall off the list. >> we don't know if we can open one day, have to close the next day. we are just playing it by ear. >> reporter: no word on how long it will

today, cierra johnson has the latest on the details tof firefighting there. >> yes, we are a little bit away from where the actual fire is, and we have positioned ourselves near silverado trail south near the concrete winery, and we know that investigators believe that both fires came from some of the lightning strikes that we saw over the last couple of days. we were covering them for days, and the lightning struck may have hit some of the brush starting that fire. the crews are working to knock down the fire, and that is near several wineries here in st. helena and the latest check is that the hennessey fire has consumed 205 structures that are threatened and cal fire is saying zero percent containment. and chp says that the lightning strike was seen before the refofrt first fire, and business and homeowners are doing what they can to put sprinklers on the roof to protect the homes and businesses. this is what one owner of a nearby winery says he thinks about losing his nearly 130-year-old family business. >> it looped around the canyon, and now it is just where smoke sup there. it's

live for us now on "today in the bay" cierra johnson is in vaccaville with the very latest. cierra? >> yes, this is the second day my photographer and i are in this community and just to give you an idea of how bad things are. on the way here from the city, you can still see those flames in the middle of the highway. it's pretty surreal driving up and literally seeing flames in the median and on the side of the road. that just gives you a sense of how bad things are. kari mentioned you can see the smoke on the radar and you can see it in the air and smell ash. we have video with what folks were dealing with overnight. second major night of folks battling this fire. this video was gathered, again, vaccaville 55 miles away from the city and right now according to cal fire, this is 0% contained and has burned 120,000 acres around napa, sonoma and solano counties. hot spots in the middle of the freeway and last night that fire spread from one spot to the other and it continues to spread throughout other communities. hillsburg is now on notice for evacuation. they have not proved the tri

let's get to nbc bay area's cierra johnson. this is where the evacuation orders have just been issued. and i know you've been with us since early this morning. how have things changed? >> reporter: yes. good morning. since the sun's come up, we've really been able to get a better feel for just how dangerous this fire was. at last check it was 46,000 acres that this fire caused by lightning a couple days ago has burned through earlier this morning before the evacuation order was even put into place, folks were leaving because of just how bad things were. this is a cattle ranch i'm on. and you can see bales of hay just going up in flames. entire homes were destroyed. 50 structures in all is the latest count that were burned. right now families were working to get their animals out. 100 acres and they were looking to make entire houses burned to the ground. we have video from english hills road and canalo road. that's where those people were looking to evacuate. we heard stories of folks working to get out. there were also some in

we have kris sanchez, bob redell, cierra johnson, and kari hall. we'll take a break and be back with more fire coverage in just a moment. >>> welcome back to our expanded midday newscast. we are following all of the fires. let's turn to the czu complex fire where homes burned to the ground in santa cruz county overnight and the fire continues to grow unchecked. we have nbc bay area's kris sanchez out there on the ground in scotts valley. what's happening out there, kris? >> reporter: well, hi, there, chris. we heard from some veteran cal fire firefighters, decades of experience. they had a hard time putting into words how big this fire is. then they added that it does have the potential to reach the city limits of santa cruz. the crackling of the fire burning in the santa cruz mountains actually sounds like heartbreak. it looks like heartbreak, too, as family homes burned along with redwoods that haven't burned in a hundred years. more than 20 homes and structures are now confirmed loss, perhaps not even counting these. 25,000 evacuates are out of

let's get to cierra johnson. a lot of uncertainty going into the week. >> reporter: yes, exactly. when the state announced their latest numbers on thursday it was presented with the caveat that the cases may be higher than they're presented because there's been a glitch in the system used to gather that data and because of that data glitch the state is not adding any additional counties to the list and they're not taking any counties off of that watch list. now the watch list is made up of counties that did not meet the six metrics including case rates above 10 per 10,000, people over a 14 day period and hospital increase of 10% or more over three days. every county in the bay area is on that list and required to close gyms and malls. they are not coming off the list despite the fact "the mercury news" reports san dmateo and santa clara is close to being off of it. >> we don't know if we can open one day, close the next day. we're just playing it by ear. >> reporter: right now no word on how long it will take the state to correct the system glitch. as many counties sit in the dark
