the fbi says christopher cornell, a 20-year-old unemployed man from the suburbs of cincinnati planned to set off pipe bombs at the u.s. capitol and then gunned down lawmakers and staff as they tried to escape. this morning his father is blasting the fbi accusing the agency of setting his son up. we're going to hear from him in just a minute but first i want to turn to susan candiotti. she's been following the story and the investigation. tell us more. >> well carol, apparently the biggest mistake made by this young man was using twitter and social media and that, in part is how the fbi sniffed him out. a criminal complaint lays out the alleged plot. the suspect, christopher cornell, goes on twitter last summer in the cincinnati area posting comments and videos supporting isol. a confidential informant gets involved. the fbi says the two start exchanging messages online. cornell writes quote, we should just wage jihad under our own orders and plan attacks and everything. we should meet up and make our own group in alliance with the islamic state here and plan operations ourselves. now

. >> reporter: the fbi report says christopher lee cornell from cincinnati ohio, was in the final staplings of the plot of opening fire on u.s. lawmakers as they ran out. fbi officials have been keeping an eye on cornell after an informant tipped them off over alarming statements on social media about launching violent jihad. he had been in contact with people overseas in honor of isis. the complaint says some communications happened over the summer. one, this is a quote, he allegedly said i believe we should wage jihad under our orders. after that he took steps. researchers pipe bombs and targeting the building. he bought two semiautomatic rifle rifles. he was arrested. his father did speak to cnn. he says he is shocked by this. he had no knowledge of his son's alleged plot. it is important to point out here christine, officials say he did not pose a threat to the public during the course of the investigation over the last few months. >> pamela brown with that story. john a really interesting story. the fbi saying he purchased weapons and planning to do damage at the u.s. capitol. >> obvio

let's remember, he was in cincinnati. he was nowhere near washington at the time. and possession of firearm in furtherance of attempted crime or violence. should we expect other ones to follow? >> well, there may be further charges. as this thing moves toward trial. these charges will be disputed in a court of law. there will be a judge, perhaps a jury as well depending on whether he elects to have a trial with a jury. and there will be discussions about which of these charges they actually will go forward with and which they will not. but ultimately a judge and jury will act as the auditor in the case. but the charges are fairly typical. >> with that, joey, i get the possession of firearm and furtherance of an attempted crime of violence. i'm not sure i can see all the evidence so far. again, the burden of evidence a jury would have to deal with. could it not be argued he was fantasizing. >> they're going to make a lot of arguments. what the defense attorneys will say is that the law provides that mere preparation is never enough. there was substantial preparation
