so society of cincinnati's collections documenting revolutionary war and its legacy are of the broad scope of my talk today. we did begin acquiring in 1783, which is the the society was founded. so we are just a month shy of our 239th birthday, despite that long history. i'll particularly focus today on our robert charles lawrenceburg aside collection on the art of war in the age of the american revolution, which was created in 1988, and it now holds many of our most important collections and draws scholars for both its breadth and specificity. so forgive me, i can't ignore sort of the primer on what the society is and talk a little bit about our early collecting as a foundation for where we go with the ferguson collection the society of the cincinnati is america's oldest veterans organization and among the oldest historical organizations in the nation. founded in may 1783 by continental army officers camped along the hudson river near newburgh, new york. as the revolutionary war was coming to a the army was starting disband and uncertainty for. the future of the soldiers lives as we

in cincinnati, people are really involved in their community. here in washington or wherever you're from, that is a good thing about america, but there is a creeping loneliness. that's where i agree with what the paper talked about. it was already there pre-covid. but it exacerbated it. it made people feel more lonely. there was a stat over the weekend i read about 30% of young women, girls who are in high school have contemplated suicide. 30%. and my daughter sally is here somewhere. she's no longer in high school but i think about that. this is a whole generation that feels the loneliness and a sense of despair. we talk about the depth of despair, the increased suicide, overdoses, many of which are caused by people medicating. amy and i work a lot in the area for opioids, it has shifted, these horrible pills people don't mean to take. there is this trend in our country that is disturbing. to that degree, i found it helpful to read that. what is the solution? the ability to connect with your family, friends and neighbors, you remember the book,
