i am cindy hsu. investigators are trying to figure out why plane heading to mcarthur airport plunged into the water off part jefferson. cbs2's valerie castro in laurelton, queens. >> reporter: well, cindy, the pilot was one of the three people to survive the crash. we haven't been able to speak to him at this. but tonight police and the coast guard have called off the search for the final passenger on board that plane. it was scheduled to land at mcarthur airport last night. despite an extensive search by both the coast guard and suffolk county police, a queens man remains missing after a plane crashed into the long island sound. the 18-hour search covered more than 90 square miles. it crashed saturday night into the harbor just after 11:00 p.m. police say a student pilot was behind the controls when they started having engine trouble. he turned the controls over to the instructor, who landed the plane in the harbor. police say all four got out of three were rescued by suffolk county police. >> suffol

hsu. the investigators say it's one piece of the puzzle that may take weeks to solve. you are looking live at the working all day to remove 600 feet of steel. brian? >> reporter: yes, cindy, take a look. that truck you see backing down is about to get loaded with one of the pieces of this giant crane boom. they've been slicing it up into pieces, lifting it and putting it onto trucks and hauling it away. the city hopes to have what's left of this crane completely removed by tomorrow morning. sparks were flying today quite literally at the scene of the deadly crane collapse as crews use blowtorches to carefully dismantle the 565 foot long boom and find out exactly what caused it to come down. >> the main point is to cut them in locations that doesn't compromise the forensic engineering values so we can have experts study how the pieces failed. >> reporter: the crane is so pieces and haul add way. the fatal accident may now lead to changes at construction sites city wide. >> we are going to investigate whether there might be an adjustment to how operations are done based on the size of the crane. >> reporter: the horrific accident happened friday morning just before 8:30 a.
