cbs 2's cindy hsu has the story. >> reporter: 41-year-old tyrita julius disappeared march 8. today police community in tinton falls where she was last seen. she had been spending time with a female friend and was reportedly dropped off at the long branch train station around 7 p.m. but video at the station has that report. and it's not believed she boarded a train that night. her family wearing shirts saying team tyrita made a desperate plea to whoever knows something and is holding back. directed to you. and you know who you are. in a moment of being upset, we can at times react and do something that we instantly regret. >> reporter: just five months. ago she and her daughter were shot in linden right to the front windshield of their car. police believe tyrita was the target. they recovered but the gunman was never found. police say there is no definite connection between the shooting and the woman's investigating. police say tyrita is about 5'7", 150 pounds, and was last seen wearing this shirt with a basketball on it. she also has scarring on her shooting. >> she has the w

i'm cindy hsu. thousands of people are still in the dark from last night's powerful storm. people in new jersey woke up to trees down and large branches outside their homes. one man still has a dead tree in his bedroom. in the bronx, the roof of a vacant home flew into the driveway and the street. and the winds also caused problems at a construction site in brooklyn. you can see scaffolding that is still hanging from a vacant building. we begin with meteorologist elise finch in the weather center. >>> cindy, take a look at these winds. we told you there would be a high wind warning in effect starting at midnight last night. this is the reason why. we had 64 mile-per-hour wind gusts in beach haven, new jersey and at jfk. staten island at 57. newark and stanford, 55 mile- per-hour wind gusts. as a result, it is no wonder we're seeing the significant damage we're seeing, including downed power lines in west orange, large trees and power lines down in farmingdale. tree fell onto a parked car, partial roof collapse. this is what we're talking about. the winds have died down sign

i'm dick brennan in for cindy hsu. a fire that broke out more than four hours ago is still burning, leaving families homeless and investigators searching for answers. cbs 2's hazel sanchez is live in cyprus hills with the latest. hazel? >> reporter: dick, at this point we still don't know what caused this five-alarm fire. as you said, it started at about 6:30. firefighters say they have it contained, but you can see they are stillwatering down hot spots in some of the homes, at least three homes a total loss. the fire spread to three other buildings, including a church, but those structures can be repaired. and thankfully, all lives were spared. the flames were intense and moved fast, devouring three multifamily homes on arlington avenue, including pillar pena's home for eight years. she was at work when the fire started. >> somebody called me and told don't know. >> watching this, i can't imagine what's going through your mind right now. >> i know. everything is inside, you know? the best thing is nobody got hurt. bla

good evening, i'm cindy hsu. happening now an intense man hunt for three suspects caught on camera in the case of attacking a teenager in a quiet neighborhood. the words are just as concerning as the weapons the suspects carry. dave carlin is live in astoria with more. >> reporter: cindy, it happened here on 10th street, and cops say that these teen suspects had weapons, a baseball bat and a metal pipe, and cops say they picked on this victim because of his race. >> police want the public to be on the lookout for this trio of teenagers, wanted for an alleged hate crime on a young man during daylight hours on wednesday in astoria. in this just released surveillance video you see the three suspects walking along 10th street. camera so you never see the 19- year-old victim who police say told them he was minding his own business walking along this section of sidewalk near his home just before 1:30 when he was confronted. one of the young suspects aledly called him arab as the team was sucker punched twice in the fac

cindy hsu reports. >> reporter: the overnight quake shook the region as teams combed the rubble searching for survivors of thursday night's quake. guests in this hotel were awakened by a magnitude 7.3 earthquake early saturday morning. just 24 hours after thursday's quake that killed at least nine people in the same area, there are widespread reports of damage. you can see panic at a tv station in kumamoto. the violent shaking sent them stumbling across the newsroom as they searched for protection from the falling debris. the deadly magnitude 6.5 quake hit the japanese island of kyushu just before 9:00 thursday night. aftershocks are slowing down rescue efforts. teams were able to save a baby. people could still be trapped under debris. hundreds have been forced from homes that are destroyed or too unstable to stay in. as many as 44,000 people were seeking shelter. officials say thursday's quake may have been a foreshock to saturday's earthquake. so far there are no new reports of fatalities. the tsunami warning has been lifted. but this is the strongest earthquake to hit japan since 2011
