cinthia pimentel is here with more on the project that's right. kira.ell, researchers at uc san diego, scripps institution of oceanography are deploying deep argo floats all over the world. and here's how they work. the technology can dive about four miles down into the ocean for many days at a time. it measures temperature, salinity, even in some of the most remote places on earth. the data is sent back via satellite and available to the public for free. and scientists say what they're learning lately is alarming. we see this very steady, long term trend. it is increasing every year. it's been increasing every year. we're getting hotter and hotter and hotter. that's our planet warms. our oceans absorb about 90% of that heat. this leads to water expanding, sea levels rising along with many other issues that not only will be present at the coast, but it should trickle on inland. as we go on into the future. you can learn more about climate change. possible solutions. those argo floats. all of this is on our website, nbcbayarea.com. under our climate in c

cinthia pimentel has a quick look at our microclimate forecast. such confusing weather out there, but you say it will be only for today. we were getting ahead of ourselves trying to think it was summer last week with some warm temperatures, but now we are returning things back to maybe february. we have a low pressure system bringing in some rain to california. it has started first in the north bay this morning and it's creeping into parts of san francisco, the peninsula scattered as it makes its way into the tri-valley and down here into san jose. but just about everybody should prepare for what is to come. the models are updating our rain totals could get heavy at times as we make those saturday plans throughout about the mid morning, but then into the afternoon i do see some clearing ahead, so a spring storm here will bring some heavy downpours at times, even some gusty winds 15 to 35 miles an hour. but it's those temperatures of about a 15 to 20 degree drop. you'll need those jackets and you'll need the chains going up into the sierra. there i

and cinthia pimentel, it's nice out right now. it is nice. but for our inland valleys away from the coast, you've probably already started to feel and notice those changes. waking up this morning, we have a dense fog advisory and it's really for the coast and parts of our valleys up into santa rosa as well, so we can see the visibility just coming down over there around two miles and then to about nothing in half moon bay. so you just have to be careful navigating the roads early this morning. but again, it is nice. most of most of the temperatures are starting in the upper 50s san jose. we're already at nearly 60 degrees, and it's not even 6:00 yet. and we'll wake up in the 50s through oakland and walnut creek. beautiful skies after a pretty active overnight hours with the northern lights just kind of stretching down into parts of north america, it could continue for today. and we'll talk about that at seven. but as far as our temperatures, we have another warm day. look at antioch by 2 p.m, nearing those 90 degree temperatures. so we'll tal

and now let's turn to cinthia pimentel with how solar energy is helping move the bay area forward. and the nation too. yeah, that's right, kerry. the u.s. has just hit 5 million solar installations, and we can take particular pride in that number. california has the most solar capacity out of any state, and san francisco has the most solar jobs of anywhere because so many companies originated here. and the bay area was open to the idea early on. just last year, the electricity generated from homes or community centers accounted for around 41% of the state's total solar generated electricity. here's the head of the solar energy industries association with more on this milestone. so we installed one, our first 1 in 1973, and then we took 40 years to get to a million, and we only took eight years to go from 1 million to 5 million. and so it's representative and indicative of just the rapid growth of solar in this country. he she says that to keep moving forward, we need to put pressure on our leaders to update the grid to support renewable energy. and california needs to pair solar wi

let's check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at the forecast. good morning kara.ood morning everyone. we've all made it to the weekend. but and i don't know about you, but i felt it just a touch cooler this morning. we slept with the window open. we definitely felt that breeze coming in. so it was hard to get out of bed this morning. we're starting at 57 down here in san jose. those winds out of the south still calm in the teens, and as we go on into palo alto and san rafael, also in those low 50s and 55 through san francisco, we can also notice a bit of a lower cloud deck there, but it is patchy compared to what we were dealing with yesterday. as typical, we've been in this rinse and repeat cycle. it's going to peel back to the coast as we go on through the mid morning hours, and pretty much just hang around there for its weekend as we go on into the afternoon, we can see it hugging the coastline by around 530, but everybody inland should be in for a nice and clearing afternoon. temperatures will actually be just at a few degrees cooler than what we were dealing

all right, let's check in with cinthia pimentel for a look at our sunday microclimate forecast .od morning everyone. well, compared to yesterday, we're seeing some areas of some patchy clouds. but overall, off to a clear start down here in san jose over on towards walnut creek. just a little bit of those gloomy skies. but i see more sunshine coming into the picture in a few hours as we go on into san francisco. here's where some of the areas of those patchy clouds are hanging around. but it should start to clear out and actually give way to a very beautiful day in san francisco. what's the biggest event? of course, you've heard it all week long. we're preparing for bay to breakers. it starts at eight this morning. there's all kinds of road closures and stuff, but as far as the temperatures go, runners out there chilly. you know that san francisco weather, we're starting off in the 50s, but then by the middle of the run, more of that sunshine. we can see the clouds clearing out and then if you plan to hang out in the city, temperatures will be in the 60s under mostly sunny skies.

we're going to turn now to the forecast and check in with cinthia pimentel. hey, cynthia.l, you might have felt the cool down last night going to bed. and this morning as well. we have less of that cloud cover that we were waking up to yesterday morning. look at petaluma. some nice clear skies over 101. there are some patchy clouds around san francisco. of course it wouldn't be the bay area without them. there over on into san jose we had that low deck of cloud cover yesterday. today it's pretty much absent our temperatures, however, are a bit cooler 50 degrees right now in san jose, 43 in saratoga, some low 50s around the immediate base, san mateo at 5250 in orinda. but of course, cooler up there into the north bay, starting off in those chilly 40s, 43 and novato and 45 into santa rosa. there are a lot of things going on around the bay area for this long extended weekend. notice today we are going to be warming up much quicker and clearing those skies than we were yesterday morning. our inland planner shows us that by seven into the 9 a.m. hour in our inland valleys, we'r
