mike williams, president of the florida afl-cio. how would you described unions today? guest: many workers are struggling for am looking for an answer, looking for help. the issues they're facing every day, more and more leaders of organized labor from rank-and- file activists, and state and national leaders are recognizing that the education has to occur with workers and that is an ongoing process in building a true movement in the state of florida. there's great optimism in this country that the union movement is alive, growing, and will have significant impact on the lives of all workers in this country, not only now but to come. host: what percentage of florida workers in a right to work state are represented by unions? guest: it depends on the particular workplace discipline. it is about 10%-12%. host: is that consistent nationwide? guest: i would say no. there are other states that represent more density of union workers in those states. i would say florida is nearer the bottom, one of the lower tiers for the percentage of wor

-cio now with us is randi weingarten president of the american federation of teachers talk about that movie that i was just telling you about funded by cranky billionaires and you know there's apparently randi a lot of money to be made in education what's going on in your field. so what's going on is they're not holy alliance between lots of cash strapped mare's and right wing governors and other elected officials who know that parents want a great education for their kids and who know that education and the economy are linked together but they don't want to spend the investment or go to the public for the investment so they demonize and scapegoat the teachers who are the only who are the ones trying to make a difference in the lives of kids it's a first recession or getting out of recession i've ever seen where instead of teachers being lionized they become vilified and so then in addition to that you have these outside folks who basically say we can't make it for cheaper we can do it cheaper just let us do it for profit so we don't have enough money in the system to help all kids ge

even the afl-cio indicates that. the american federation of teachers, an afl-cio affiliate, compared teachers' salaries across the country, and when they did the first study, they did the real numbers of what teachers were making, and then they did a very interesting thing. they revised those numbers based on the cost of living. they used the index to compare wages in states. you know what the american federation of teachers, the afl- cio, found? teachers in right to work states have higher average incomes and those in other states. people never talk about cost of living-adjusted wages, byron. when you have a plumber in new york city compared to a plumber in utah, have a difference in the wage rates, but when you factor in the cost of living, individuals in right to work states into a lot better. -- do a lot better. guest: that is right, and why it is so difficult to understand why people rely on government power to compel them. i believe that workers will find them, and union officials' arguments against right to wo
