ciril cirillo. stunned by his death last wednesday. cirillo was shot and killed while standing at his post at the national war memorial. his funeral procession begins in about an hour. joining me now is cbc correspondent hannah. good morning to you. it seems that the country has embraced corporal cirillo. >> absolutely. this is the final salute for nathan. he'll have a funeral in his hometown of ontario. people are beginning to line the streets. thousands are expected to show up. in is a private funeral, however, prime minister steven harper and all opposition leaders will be in attention. it's a quite -- on top of his casket will include a canadian flag, his belt he had on when he was shot, a bayonet, and cirillo's badge will be placed

cirillo was shot in his back as he was standing guard at that war memorial. as for the gunman, michael zehaf-bibeau we now know he was already on the radar prior to the shooting with ties to jihadists. he converted to islam. his passport confiscated by canadian authorities when they learned he planned to fight overseas. we go live to ottawa. you were just inside of parliament. you have new video to share for us and more details as far as what exactly happened. >> reporter: it was amazing to be walking in those halls where a little over 24 hours ago, brooke, we do know there was a shootout and ultimately this lone gunman was shot and killed before claiming another life. i want to first set the scene where we are. we are just in front of that national war memorial where it was nathan cirillo, the corporal who is just 24 years old, a father, someone who had an infectious smile, who loved animals, lost his life at the hands of michael zehaf-bibeau. a convert to islam that had jihadist connections. after he took the life of corporal cirillo, he ended up going acro

just this past weekend, cirillo post eed a photo with a tourist. the friend who took the picture described their encounter. we stopped at the memorial and asked for a photo with a handsome guard. he laughed and indulged us. you will never be forgotten. >> a u.s. jury has convicted four contractors with a blackwater company in a mass shooting in a baghdad square seven years ago. one was found guilty of first degree murder. the rest of voluntary manslaughter. prosecutors say the victims were innocent men, women and children. survivors still feel the trauma of that day, as we found out. >> 50 child's life ended with a bullet in his head in 2007. he was not yet 10. this man was studying to become a doctor. his life, too, tragically ended on that september day. these are some of the faces of the 17 iraqi victims of the shooting rampage in baghdad's square seven years ago. in an incident involving the u.s. security firm known at the time as blackwater worldwide. the firm said the state department convoy had come under attack in a central baghdad square.

corporal cirillo was shot. a car speeds toward parliament, the gunman gets out and runs toward the government building. he had reportedly used crack cocaine in the past and spent time in a homeless shelter. he tried at one point to get a passport to go to libya or syria. just last week he met his mother for lunch. reportedly it was the first time they'd seen one another in five years. after running into parliament, he was shot by a sergeant at arms, kevin vickers. on thursday, members of parliament gave vickers a standing ovation for his actions. >>> federal aviation officials are heading to the site of just a horrific mid-air collision. it happened right outside of washington, d.c., near a public airport. three people on board a helicopter died after it collided with a small airplane. what you see here is the plane and parachute dangling from tree branches following that collision. two people on board the plane were treated for minor injuries. the helicopter was on a training flight. the plane was coming in fo

beyond that crowd there is a row of nathan cirillo's colleagues. those members of the army reserve unit that he was a part of, they have been standing in attention for some 15 minutes, very quietly there. it's very difficult to make out because they are past the crowd but they have come to pay their respects. this is an army reserve unit if you look it up, it's the primary war fighters. they're in charge of essentially terminating the enemy. all of his troops, his colleagues are here, paying their respects to the fallen comrade. what we can tell you about the investigation is that u.s. a authorities are looking and trying to track down any information about the gunman. they have his passport. it was confiscatconfiscated. all that information was dispersed both the u.s. authorities as well as canadian authorities and they're trying to get a more complete picture of exactly what he was doing. we did speak to one of our cbc colleagues and apparently he may have been staying at a mission not far from this location and he had been there anywhere between

now we're learning more about the man who killed cirillo.e has been identified as michael zehaf-bibeau, islamic convert. he had online interactions with islamic jihadists. apparently he had a low profile. he does have a criminal record involving drugs and violence and authorities had some suspicions about him but he was not being investigated as someone who was a high risk. not among the 90 people classified as an important threat. he came to ottawa october 2nd, in the process of applying for a passport and had possible plans to go to syria. what prompted wednesday's attack is unclear. we learn he fired two shots at cirillo. he drove to the parliament building. we got a chance to see firsthand where he apparently burst through the doors, ran right down the hall of honor, even where the prime minister were caucusing. gun shots rang out. eventually he stopped at the end of a hallway, hid in an alcove. the sergeant in arms, kevin vickers, reportedly grabbed a gun from his office, just around the corner, and crawled along the wall to get into a
