cisco shares took a hit after disappointing guidance for the second quarter. josh lipton has more on the numbers from san francisco. >> reporter: cisco is undergoing big changes, and investors got more data into how that transition is really going. the tech giant announced that it will eliminate 5500 jobs or about 7% of its work force. executives say that was a tough decision but one needed to drive strong financial performance in the future. that news came as cisco reported q4 results which were better than expected. eps of 63 cents on revenue of 12.64 billion versus expectations of 60 cents on 12.6 billion. gross margins clocked in at 64.6%. rbc's mitch steves says that number shows that cisco's ceo, chuck robbins, is doing a good job of transitioning the company from hardware to software, services and security. though he also noted that guidance for q1 gross margins did imply a decline. like a lot of tech giants here, cisco is transitioning to the era of cloud commuting. businesses are not as interested in buying pricey hardware, instead purchases relativel

that would be a positive for cisco.n certain areas of their portfolio, they weren't well positioned. capex hasn't been phenomenal. to be down 12% year over year is a big decline. >> you ever have a buy on this stock? >> we have a buy on it, yeah. >> i wasn't going to use dog with fleas anymore, i love dogs. this has been dead money for ten years? >> so, if you go back to a lot of these big tech names in the bubbl bubble. >> if this is tech, we need a new word for what tech is supposed to be. the market cap is $150 billion right now. it was 600 billion at one year. i want to see a 10 or 20-year chart. i don't care to see where the -- >> i do. >> oh, remember that? >> yeah. >> i'm talking about in the last five years. the last ten years. you can do anything with your money. is there any reason -- you have a buy at 30 on this. why? >> well a couple things. i think it's still cheap. it's not 100 times earnings like in the bubble. >> i guess when you have single digits, it's a buy. >> you have a dividend yield in this market

we have earnings from cisco. this is important indicator of way things going in the high-tech community. lori rothman on the floor of the new york stock exchange, how does it look? >> first quarter is reporting quarter it is a beat top and bottom line. i go through the numbers in a second but headline cisco is looking like a little bit of a lower outlook lowering future forecasts revenue declining 2 to 4% with earnings per share in the following quarter come in range 55 to 5cents a share. compare to what they're reporting in the fir, cisco 61 cents a share which is adjusted number and two pennies better than wall street forecast. you see a first quarter beat for cisco which apparently is still struggling from a weak i.t. spending market climate. in terms of revenue, 12.4 billion reported by cisco. that is a little bit of better than 12.34 billion wall street forecast but still down from revenue same quarter year ago. comment from the ceo, kruk chuck robbins. we had a good quarter despite a challenging global busi

let's start with cisco. how do you like it? what do you see this there? >> what's interesting, over the past year american companies hoarding cash abroad. there's reasons for that but the single biggest one, we have a punitive tax rate to earn profits abroad and bring them back home as cash. the last time we had -- >> people keep the profits overseas. >> they do. they wait for a better opportunity to bring them here. here is why. last time we had clean sweep for republicans in the white house. in both chief of congress passed a law that allowed those companies to bring profits back home at much lower tax rate than statutory 35%. that is not only entirely possible this time around but highly likely. why is that good for cisco? it's one of the companies that stashed tens of billions abroad. what will they allow cisco today? pay a high one off dividend. microsoft a good example. last time republicans did that paid 11% one-time special dividend. >> number two, another big blue chip. johnson & johnson. >> johnson & johnson, another sector that's likely to bene
