mexico city used to be a city of lakes. it was like the venice of america, and the aztecs had a very, very sophisticated water management system, but the war with the spanish destroyed everything. they somehow were determined to recreate madrid. so they decided to drain the valley of mexico. so mexico city is now a big flat concrete wilderness, but this land is very flood prone. - and therein lies the irony in all of this. while mexico city is running dry, it also receives an unbelievable amount of rain, making it extremely vulnerable to flooding. picture this: during the rainy season, mexico city gets one and a half times more rain than london does in an entire year. that's a lot of water. but it heads straight into the sewers, and that's not the only problem. mexico city is on a very soft ground, because it was a lake, so the city sinks very quickly. parts of mexico city today sink 40 centimetres a year. really? yeah, which is mind-boggling. and the aquifer which is further down, what we depend on, is just very, very quic

we need to ensure that our city is a safe city and a just city . that work is incredibly important.need to make sure that we have a police department and the public safety agency that is responding to the needs of our city's residents, but that it is also transparent, that it is also accountable, that it is also diverse and reflective of the city it serves. that is central to my work that -- my work. that has been central to my message, although some of that gets left out of of many conversations. we've got so much work to do to fulfill what i call the promise of community policing, where our communities, our community based organizations, our city's residents are in partnership with our police department and that they are present, that they are engaged, that they are doing the very important work of keeping our city safe. i believe in investing in public safety, not defunding our public safety agency and the work that we need to do as a city. moderator: one minute. >> as you mentioned, our residents are very concerned and what boston needs right now is solutions be it -- solutions.

the old milan, old european cities, even old american cities were individual. if we needed a building here, some guy paid for it and they built a building. now we are in a different age. the process has changed. now there are developers with enormous amounts of power and working with "star-chitects". is this a threat to the future development of our cities? that we are leaving it up to very wealthy groups that we cannot really influence the same way that we could influence the organic nature of cities back in the day? yes, this could be a real danger, but as far as you're combining the old and the new and as far as you accelerate this process of city creation, you can check and balance better. at the end, you should and you could avoid this loss of control and this loss of vision by real-estate owners and mix up things together. so maybe the city there, the old city, is the only effective watchdog that can prevent the new part from being detached from reality, from the common good and from the people. very efficient. everything is all in here. now we are arrivi

[upbeat music] johnny devenanzio: what was the inspiration behind kokomo? we actually met in a restaurant that i used to work at. it was a caribbean restaurant and he was a guest chef there. we fell in love, really quick got married in under eight months. - you work fast, my friend. - yeah. yeah. [laughing] so it made sense for us to just open up our own establishment and make it caribbean and let it explore the love for each other as well as the love for the islands that we have. johnny devenanzio: what a beautiful story. you're both first time restaurateurs? yes. not only did we open a restaurant in the pandemic, ria was pregnant. we had one child already and just her enduring through that inspired me as a man to work harder and to be better. it literally hit probably three weeks before we were about to open. so at that point, we had invested everything into it. oh, man. yeah, that's scary. was scary as hell. yeah. table two. city limits. l.a.as an odd city structure and goes down to the san pedro area to pick up a little bit of the port. it has some islands in lake beverly hills, santa monica, or would that are not burbank, not part of it. there are islands that you are missing and long stretches your connecting and sometimes you're looking across the street sing gosh that would be really amazing. but that is not in the city of l.a. and what is behind you is. my trips also mimic that surveyed like a comparison map to illustrate the sheer size of life. shows the seven major cities jammed into the borders pretty really wish i would have remembered this map when ken gave me his first 65 page shot list. i did not remember or realize what is getting myself into. the photos in the book all came to be the same way. i added all of ken's target from a 65 page shot list to my google's maps limit between sites like this when i tried to leap preplanned for the best shot like here but sometimes i was totally wrong when i drove up and i

this is due in large part to chapter "e" of the city's code which prohibits it city from inquiring into sexual orientation, practices, or habits of city employees. chapter 12e was necessary at the height of the aids epidemic to protect lgbtq employees from potential discrimination. at the time, it was often assumed that any member of the lgbtq might be living with hiv/aids, and it had a tremendous sigma attached to it. fortunately, the perceptions have shifted over time, and the discrimination and harassment has since been prohibited under federal, state, and local law. the ordinance we are discussing today would amend the administrative code to repeal chapter 12e and would allow us to begin to collect sogi data on future applicants. by collecting this data, we can better track our citywide equity goals, address any gaps, and identify strategies to attract lgbtq employees interested in public service. we have paul walters who can talk about this ordinance in greater detail. >> chair: thank you, supervisor mandelman. who are we going to start with? >> i believe pou. >> thank you, supervi

in our city. it is absolutely unprecedented in the history of this city. all that being said, what we have before us today are two of the first purchases that have been vetted after the grenada and the diva. some of whom will be competitive for state dollars, some of whom will use exclusively our local prop c money, but what that means also is we have the option and opportunity again to be able to move forward a program to create affordable housing to deal with this crisis in parts of san francisco that have not been part of the solution prior to this date. and that brings me to the project in front of us today. the mission inn. the mission inn owner was one of the 100-plus respond wants. mr. adams and his team, director mcspadden vetted the project. there was an appraisal done. the appraisal was done by on outside third party that was vetted and approved and seen. and this project came in at market rate, even less than what is projected to be in a couple years as the economy recovers. so we have

gross receipts in the city. over 50 million dollars. >> we have an oversight committee that recommended hotel purchases. and in our city. it costs about 8 to $900,000 per unit for new construction. we will be purchasing this building all the rehabilitation that will take place. it will be 400. 50,000 $1 per unit. 52 unit supervisor, something he says. >> the board is expected to approve another 2 sites in the coming weeks that in total will house more than 300 homeless individuals. one of those properties is a student apartment building in summer and another is a single-room occupancy hotel in the mission. the city plans to apply for state funding for at least one and possibly all 3 properties that is excepted could cover about half of each however, the state funding through homekey as time sensitive now, the city can miss out on matched funding for a 4th site. the continued cannon hotel in japan town after strong opposition from its neighbors room wants homelessness fall. >> t people are worried th have concern

all these incredible places that are institutions in our city. i want to thank supervisor mar for working with us to establish this new program, this vandalism relief fund that will provide anywhere from 1-2 thousand dollars to those who need to provide repairs the first their businesses. we allocated a million dollars in the budget to do that because we know there are so many businesses that have experienced this. this is one of so many of the programs that we try to offer to help support and protect our small businesses. there's not a one size fits all. san francisco is an expensive city, but i'm really proud of the fact that we continue time and time again to look at creative ways to invest in small businesses. they are the driving engine of san francisco. we can't just keep talking about it and adding more layers of bureaucracy to make life difficult for them. we have to make changes to our policies, we have to make changes to our investment. we have to do that because we need to see a change in the city we all know and love, built on the bac
