san francisco, one of the last big city airports to make the change and it is good because it's also of the worst in on-time performance. the faa has approved a change that would allow planes landing at sfo to stagger on the two parallel runways instead of having to line up single file which is what they have to do now. that means as many as 40 planes an hour could land even in low visibility. low visibility, aka fog, is one of the biggest problems at sfo. during clear visible conditions. the two aircraft and the crews can visually site one another and maintain separation. you get into low clouds and fog. it requires a greater debris of separation for safety. >> that separation slows arrivals from 60 planes an hour to just 30 when the weather is bad. the main airports in boston, seattle and new jersey already use this system to improve on- time performance. now, in our next hour of "mornings on 2," we're gonna hear from passengers and pilots about on-time performance and what's going on at the airport. reporting live in the newsroom, pam cook, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right, pam.

this you see these new york city airports the delays are up to about an hour. philadelphia has been at about two hours all day. but that just dropped to around 87 minutes. that's good news. they they have had very low lousy. not as many planes off the ground. slower pace. that's where you see the backup. the storm has moved through area. temperatures plummet. looking at terms into the mid 20's all the way down across parts of alabama and places like atlanta and birmingham. very cold air. you see this is gone. we are going to see temperatures tomorrow all the way to south florida all the way into the mid 60's. very, very cool air moving in behind us. we still have the rain and you notice the snow that was there across western pennsylvania, western new york now getting in closer to eastern pennsylvania. headed towards jersey. enough cold air get in with the last bit of precipitation. nothing that will stick quickly. a lot of those roads could potentially freeze overnight. be very careful if you are driving early tomorrow morning. by midnight seeing the storm gone

i'm at tacloban city airport. the first plane has actually just landed just a couple of minutes ago. you can see behind me, there are a couple of hundred, 200, 300 people here. they have been -- they have either been sleeping here all night, camping here all night, or have come through during the dark hours. as you can see, this place is just a shell of what it was. we came through this airport about 12 hours ahead of the storm. it is unrecognizable. the ceiling's gone, all the walls are blown out. there's masonry walls down and right around the car park outside here, i don't know if you can see it, but it's just debris really everywhere. this is actually, though, now a functioning airport. the marines who arrived for the first time yesterday are going to be in here actually turning this into a 24-hour operation. for that you need runway lights, you also need radar. we're going to get both of those in the very, very near future. meanwhile, people are also using this as a place to get relief supplies, the stuff tha

and in the hard-hit city of tacloban, storm victims with no food, shelter or water rushed to the demolished airportch of rice and canned food sunday but delivering aid to the other remote communities are is huge challenge. key roads are impassable and communications severed. the only functioning medical facility can't admit any more patients. thousands breaking into grocery stores. and haiyan leaving an entire city on edge. it gives you an idea just the extent of the damage. and that u.s. support couldn't come soon enough. what this country does lack is the ability to get a large amount of material out to places by air. and that's exactly what the u.s. can provide, that is what's needed. so expecting to see u.s. choppers on the tarmac in front of me fairly soon. and that would -- should signal the relief effort really kicking off into high gear. it's going to take a long time with the u.s. support and other country as well, virtually every country has been offering assistance in some form or another. that's what the president of the philippines told me yesterday. but it is going to take a long time
