college park. well, out here on the street, anded in the city council meeting. f college park city council wants to do this, they would ve those changes would start with amendment to the city charter. now in order for that to happen they have to vote on that. in the meantime there's a lot of stirred emotions on this on both sides an a lot of people do not agree with this idea. they say it is just not fair to u.s. citizens to have non citizens be granted voting rights. and like it or not opponents say voting is a right of someone who is a citizen. >> they're not actually citizens of this country or of this state or city that doesn't make sense. they don't pay taxes. how do they have right to vote and make decisions for us as citizens of this area. >> you're only here temporarily. any choices that you make or votes thought give then you can change something. but you are only here four years or two years and then you're gone. they should not have a right with that. >> differing opinions on both side. we other communities in montgomery county like somerset and anyone

teaching a class, i teach a class at city college on the life and times of malcolm x. so that is another way that i kind of stay in touch with him. in fact, when i first started teaching at wayne state university 1967, the first book i used was the autobiography of malcolm x. it had just come out two years before. so even in the beginning you know malcolm in my teaching career, malcolm was my guidance. he was my guide right there in his book is just so absolutely expressive of the black experience in this country. so when i am teaching a course now, the memory that i have going back you know to those days in the 1960s when i was close to him and just to meet him you know after a speech at the mosque. we would line up in the hallways and he would come and go down the other cheek everyone's hand. i remember when he got to me, my cousin had talked about it before. because in a city you going to say anything? are you going to ask you a question?are always asking me, asked him. and when he got there i was aptly intimidated. i described his big hand and i said salama -- and

[cheers and applause] -- michigan. he is unusual because he has an economics degree. he worries a lot about america's coming bankruptcy. we are probably going bankrupt. how many of you students think, when you're my age

always outspoken, her mother the journalist ruth pickering was also bought it -- born in new york city. college and vassar columbia university. she too came from a family of courageous liberal thinkers. she was the kind of rare woman who dared to define herself even back in the 1920's. she resisted the prescribed roles that most women found playing. active and the suffrage movement and four years shared a house with a political socialist, max eastman and his sister. fast-forward to february 1936. this woman is now 15 years old and is already physically stunning and is a beautiful young woman to behold. years she was -- at her beck and call where the debutante balls. out at many of the clubs. it she was the belle of the ball. the weekends were full of parties at prep schools. now while attending the winter festivities weekend in 1936 in connecticut her date for that weekend was the young dashing william atwood who she had been seriously dating. he would eventually become president kennedy's ambassador to ginny. he would also become a part of a secret mission in 19 63 to approach fidel castro. be

city. it was only when i left for college that i realized that. but even though our city had a lot of struggles as a town that lost its company. it was a company for studebaker when it closed in the 1960's. it's a great place to grow up and a good community. >> how big. >> over a hundred thousand. it doesn't include the university of notre dame just outside of the city limits. we're just big enough to matter. just big enough that you taste complexity and have all the issues but small, small enough you can innovate and be creative and you can try different solutions. if you find one, we're also typical enough that a lot of other cities might be able to use them. >> i want to come back to this but after you were married you found something to do with all those buildings. >> very much. on the housing front we had a lot of vacant and abandoned houses that had to come down but a lot could be saved. on the industrial front we've got almost a thousand square foot studebaker factory that's finding new life as a new technology center harnessing the fact tha
