and abc's ron claiborne spent the day putting together what happened. >> reporter: it was like something out of a movie, only this was all too real. the drama unfolding on the packed streets right outside of one of new york city's most iconic landmarks. these images tweeted by eyewitnesses capture the chaos and horror. it began shortly after 9:00 this morning when a gunman opened fire on a former coworker, around the corner from the empire state building. the shooter walked toward 5th avenue, followed by a construction worker. who witnessed the shooting. that worker alerted two police officers on duty outside the empire state building and then, just steps from the tourist entrance, the bloody confrontation. >> as the two officers approached johnson, he pulled his .45 caliber semiautomatic pistol from his bag and fired on the officers, who returned fire, killing him. >> reporter: witnesses describe a chaotic scene. >> i heard six or seven gunshots, very crisp, very loud. >> reporter: rapid succession? >> rapid succession. >> everybody heard the gunshots and started scattering. >> i saw a

here's abc's ron claiborne now. >> reporter: a police search of the gunman's apartment turned up extra ammunition for the handgun he used to shoot a former coworker and literature about martial arts and sniper marksmanship. also found, an envelope with his keys left for his landlord leading investigators to conclude he did not expect to return home. surveillance video captured the dramatic moment friday when two police officers confronted jeffrey johnson. you can see johnson turn, raise his arm and point his .45 caliber semiautomatic at the officers. four seconds later, the officers open fire. did the police warn him, speak to him before? >> yeah, he said, "stop, stop," and we heard the shooting. >> reporter: nine bystanders were wounded, none seriously, in the hail of gunfire. all were hit by police bullets or fragments of bullets. johnson never got off a shot, police say. >> well, the bullet went in and came out my right arm. i'm very, very lucky. very blessed. >> reporter: it's not that unusual for innocent bystanders to be hit by crossfire between police and a suspect. even on a cr
