missouri democratic senator claire mccaskill wants to know how people like aaron alexis who was arresteds in 2004 and 2010 and for disorderly conduct in 2009 are able to get and keep security clearances. she wants answers from the office of personal management, also known as opm, which oversees federal background checks. mccaskill asked for records backing up the navy shooter's approval and renewals specifically whether his arrests showed up. we do know that u.s. investigation services or usis, a private company based in virginia, which does about 45% of the government's become ground checks, did the one for the navy yard shooter in 2007. then passed on the results to office of personnel management. opm says, quote: opm's involvement with matters related to aaron alexis' security clearance ended when we submitted the case to the department of defense for adjudication in december of 2007. dod did not ask opm for any additional investigative actions after it received the completed background investigation. the bottom line here is that the clearance process is designed to kick out of the sy

in fact, i just got a letter from senator claire mccaskill, overseeing an investigation into the grantingf security clearances, and she has written the office of personnel management, demanding to know how it is that alexis got these clearances, who granted them, whether proper review procedures were followed. and were investigators, these background investigations, aware of what she calls this pattern of misconduct, including his reported arrests on firearms charges, both in 2004 and then again in 2010. i should point out today that u.s. intelligence officials confirm that alexis was granted that secret security clearance in march of 2008. that's less than four years after that initial arrest in seattle for blowing out the tires with gunfire of a honda accord, and then saying he blacked out because he was fueled by anger, and in which, according to the seattle police report, his father said he had anger management problems. so all that was a matter of public record at the time that alexis got this security clearance. he was able to keep this security clearance for ten years. even though

cases where you don't want to be able to say, i told you so, but you can say it because you and claire mccaskill were on in a month ago after the snowden case. you were calling the usis people to account. i don't know if you've gotten any answers yet. >> well, we haven't. the bottom line is what happened earlier this week was a terrible tragedy. as with the snowden case earlier, look, i think corners are being cut through the security clearance process. there has to be some oversight. what i'm working on right now, andrea, is making sure that the office of personnel management, ig, that does the investigations, has access to some administrative money to be able to take a look at these companies that are doing these background checks and make sure they're doing them properly. i think without that kind of oversight, we're going to see this continue over and over and over again until we get oversight and accountability into this process. that's what we're hoping on. hopefully we can get this bill through the process quickly. maybe as early as next week. >> but isn't it true that these companies, or
