we've been following a devastating story out of clair-mel this morning. fire has destroyed a rec center neighbors that are understandably very upset. >>reporter: good morning to you, russell. right now firefighters are going to be conducting that task of making sure that not only is it safe for investigators to get inside and start looking for a cause of the fire, but also doing that overhaul, removing pieces of debris and making sure all of those hot spots are put out. and again, speaking with some of the folks that have been in the clair-mel community for many years, people that can provide perspective to us on what the winston park recreation center really means for this community and i'm here right now with principal roger stanley just on the other side of the building. you've been principal for five years and to see this today, what does it make you feel? >> well, it's a tragic situation. there's no doubt about that. this community center, it was a ray of hope for this community. hopefully it's just temporarily. hope. ly they'll rebuild this because

the winston park rec center in the clair mel section of tampa. as you can see, the building is a total loss, and if you speak with the folks who live in this community, people like jose rivera, they will tell you they lost much more than brick and mortar here this morning. they lost the heart and soul of this community. >> i lived here since about 12 years old. so about 23 years i have lived here. a lot of memories, you know, growing up? yeah. so not to see, but it's just sad because, you know, they are the kids in the community, you know. they need something like this. clair mel city, a lot of the kids think that a lot of people have forgotten about them. something like this would give them hope that there is something to look forward to, you know, with everything like that. the lightning coming in here and investing in our community, that's huge, you know. this is the heartbeat of our community here. it's just sad because it's just something that these kids need know. there is nothing worse than idle hands, you know. put something in their hand

. -- claire mel city area of hillsborough county. you can see trucks are spraying water on the flames trying to tame this. again we've been out here an hour and the flames are still burning. this building has been in the news lately. in march vinix announced they would donate $25,000 for this. neighbors say it was under construction now. this is a case kids came to play basketball and also offered child care programs that feeder schools in the area could have depended on. we spoke to a map who has been coming to the rec center since he was a kid and he was watching the flames in disbelief. >> it gives hope to young kids that they have something to look forward to. now it's gone. playing basketball, with all my day care here. just the after-school programs and things that they've done for the community for, you know, for clair mel, it's just sad. >> reporter: this is also located next to the little pals preschool center and there are several businesses in the area. a sav-a-lot, dollar tree and some homes. right now it appears the rec

mcguire joins us live from the scene at winston park rec center just off palm river road in the clair mel area. anyone inside when the fire broke out? >> reporter: thankfully no one was in the rec center but the building is a total loss. as the sun comes up we're getting a better look at the scene and right now crews are structure and look for more hotspots, then take the ladder truck back in and use a thermal camera to make sure the fire is completely out. when we arrived on scene flames were shooting 30 feet in the air and two aerial ladder trucks were brought in to fight this fire. this is a building that has been in the news lately. in march the vinick family foundation announced they were donating $2.5 million to renovate the rec center. the largest individual gift in the 90-year history of was set to be renamed the jeff and penny vinnick family winston park boys and girls club. it was a challenge for firefighters. >> every fire has its own individual challenges. this one the size of the building and how involved it was when we got on scene. put us in that defensive mode. so it's jus

it is big loss for the people in clair-mel. that rec center was in other words going major renovation and it was going to be jewel of that community. fox 13 aaron mesmer is live outside of the rec center. right. this was a really big, this is really big loss to this community. rec center meant a lot to the folks around here. i saw 1 person driveing by. you can really see is the shock on his face. we've seen tears in people's eyes. really good mean a lot right now what's going on behind me investigators are going through the wreck age trying to figure out how this fire started. there's crews back there cleaning away some of the debris. and that's really what's going to be going on throughout the from people in this community is how did this happen. how did the fire start? unfortunately it could be some time before we know that answer. this was a massive fire that tore through the winston park recreation center. neighbors could see flames from a few miles away. took an hour and a half or so at and 35 firefighters to put it out. t

in just about an hour on "10news at 6" you will see more of just how devastating this is for the clair mel dismount it's a crime alert raising serious safety. this man, brad bellinger, worked as a substitute teachner manatee county until detectives arrested him saying he sexually abused three girls. they say he knew the girls outside of school and the alleged abuse had gone on for several years. he passed a background check to get the job. some parents question whether that's enough to protect their kids. 10news sarasota newsroom reporter isabel mascarenas is taking a closer look at whether mental health considered. >> reporter: parents trust teachers to protect their kids, but when one is arrested for allegedly molesting a child, any child. >> that's one of the worst things you can do to a kid. >> reporter: some parents think psychological evaluations should be given, too. if there are red flags showing a tendancy for abuse. >> there are other jobs where they are not with children. >> there is nothing in a psych evaluation that's going to be says there are signs to look out for that might

>>russell: investigators are trying to figure out what started the fast moving fire in clair-mel. cameras were rolling as flames just rec center recently received a $2.5 million gift from the owner of the lightning and the wois and girls club of tampa bay. >>laura: trevor dooley is out on bond. he was convicted of killing his neighbor, david james, during an argument on a basketball court in 2010. dooley claims there were errors made during jury instructions and says his defense attorney was ineffective. dooley is limited to travelling his new attorney. >>russell: an armed man holding a dozen people hostage at a jacksonville credit union. >>jennifer: it's all over now and the man in custody is from tampa. this was the scene before the swat team stormed the building. a man walked in with a dog, fired his gun and order everybody into a back room. as officers swarmed the scene, investigators say the robber threatened to kill the hostages. at one point they say he even put a gun to the back of one hostage's head. around that time, two people who had been run for it. swat team member m
