clarissa, what have you been seeing? >> reporter: alyson, this is really the staging ground for rescue and aid, specifically the island of st. martins. many who we have spoken to have down right fright epping stories, alyson. in addition to the horrors they witnessed of surviving the storm, not having power, not having water, rationing food, there is a pretty desperate security situation. several people described gang of young guys marauding around town, looters, burglaries. they said all the stores have been smashed apart. all the food, all the things from the drugstore, for example, have been taken. so that has compounded a different situation. they are french territory. mack reason spent the night trying to show support saying we are going to rebuild this place. make no mistake, this is going to be a hugely complicated effort. 200,000 people across the caribbean in need of aid. 91% of the buildings on st. maarten alone wiped out. it is a desperate situation. it will take a lot of coordination between different countri

clarissa. >> reporter: hi, john. the situation here is pretty dire. as we have seen everywhere hurricane irma hit, this was a fierce storm. we took out our drone yesterday to try and scope out some of the damage. it's kreuincredible. trees have been plucked of their foliage. the real worry, and i don't know if you can see it on the drone, the streets are lined, covered, john, with trash, and trash, of course, attracts rats and rats attract disease and that's the big concern right now, there's no sanitation or running water. residents here telling us they are very concerned that not enough has been done to try and improve the hygiene situation, to try and get in some temporary chemical toilets, disposable toilets and port a potties, things of that nature. there's nowhere for people to go to the bathroom. they are forced to simply walk a few hundreds away from the terminal and go to the bathroom where they can. that obviously presents authorities and residents with a dangerous situation because it's so common, as you know, after an absolute disaster, ty

clarissa ward is live on the island of st. maarten where things are very, very hard.latest? >> reporter: that's right, chris. really st. maarten is a microcosm for other caribbean islands that find themselves going from a desperate situation to a nightmarish situation. the first thing you notice when you land here, there is no foliage left on the trees. they have been plucked clean by battering winds. smaller zets have even been tossed aside. it gives you a feeling for the force of the storm. we managed to get our drone out and start to have a look around and get a better sense of the damage which of course is huge, massive. this is going to take a major reconstruction effort. but the real concern reight now is for aid, is for water, is for food and primarily sanitation. people are concerned here because there is no running water, because they haven't been able to set up disposable chemicals toilets of some sort, and i don't know if you can see that drone footage, chris, but the streets are literally strewn with thousands of bags of garbage. as we were walking around,

our senior national correspondent clarissa ward is on the island for us.> reporter: that's right, wolf. so this is essentially a processing center. and for for last four days some 4,000 people have passed through here. a vast majority of them come from the island of st. martin which has been decimated by irma. authorities now saying 91% of the buildings on that island have been damaged. many of them have simply been wiped out. and what we've seen from the people, many of whom are almost staggering in here some on crutches, wheelchairs, many crying, looking dazed. some describing some fairly traumatic lord of fly-esque scenarios as they waited for days. food, water running out. and they described criminalality. staying up each night to kind of afford each other protection. so there was a sense of many enst. martin they were abandoned by the french government. we saw the french president today here. and he was vowing the place would be rebuilt, the water will be back, the schools reopen. but, frankly, wolf it is difficult to see how that will happen quickly.
