clarissa ward is in cairo. she joins us tonight. clarissa, what is the purpose of this trip? >> reporter: well, jeff, essentially this trip was all about damage control. secretary of state john kerry really trying to rebuild this strained relationship with egypt. and he outlined some of the things that egypt needs to do in order for that to happen, namely 2 needs to push ahead with the transition, it needs to come up with an inclusive constitution and hold free and fair parliamentary and presidential elections. de also touch briefly on the issue of that withheld u.s. aid. he said that it is not intended as a punishment and that it really shouldn't be the focus of the relationship. >> jeff: clarissa, secretary trip comes on the eve of the trial of ousted president morsi. i know it's very tense there right now. what are we expecting tomorrow? >> well, security forces here are on high alert because morsi supporters have called for large scale protests. the interior ministry says that up to 20,000 military and police will be out on the streets. the trial itself is being held in a

clarissa ward is in cairo for us tonight following the case. clarissa? >> reporter: well, scott, it was a scene of absolute chaos in that courtroom. half of the people were chanting "down with military rule." others were shouting "execute him." and morsi himself completely refused to acknowledge the courts. he just kept repeating over and over "i am the president of the republic." but in the wake of a major military crackdown on the muslim brotherhood and its leaders, the pro-morsi movement has really been driven deep underground. organizing a demonstration these days is dangerous work. after a week of negotiations, we were allowed to ataepbd meeting with a young activist called yaser. the other members of the group did not want their faces shown for fear of being arrested. plans for -r the protests included how to avoid checkpoints and what to do if the police turned up. "any time we stop we may be attacked by government thugs," the group leader warned. later yaser told us 26 of his friends have been killed and more than 100 arrested. what are some of t
