at fort clark was staffed by a very cranky for trader, a gentleman and francis. you can get a sense of his personality by reading his journal. he detested the mandan and he really detested the rats and he started keeping a record of the number frats he killed every month in his journal. next third of some of those records for you here and you can see over the course of a year from june 1836 to may of 1837 he killed a total of 1686 rats. now, that's just in a fort clark. where's all the corn stored? it's in the mandan village. just imagine the rats at the village. now, in 1832, as the rats ran amok a steamboat named yellowstone turn up the missouri river document load a village in order to service for clark. the yellowstone was the first steamer to reach the mandan. like the rats had a voracious appetite. not for maize, but that would. man dance consumed plenty of wood on their own. steamboats were in a different league. a small steamer like the yellowstone needed the equivalent of 6010h trees for each day of travel. the boats inevitably reloaded with wood where w

eyewitness news reporter dray clark tweeted this photo from the scene in our last half hour. he is joining us now from the katonah park east section with the latest. dray? >> reporter: good morning, lori. the fire is contained but technically still not under control. the fire department wants to make sure that all the hot spots are extinguished before calling the fire under control. the sense of urgency out here has been scaled back significantly. let's show you video from earlier this morning when the fire was at its peak. a lot of smoke and flames coming from the location. the fire broke out after 4:00 this morning inside a garage and quickly spread to two adjacent homes. within eight minutes of the first call for help, the fire grew to three alarms. the fire department here within two minutes and got everyone out of the building without injury. so many people worried about their belongings, we talked to one woman that said she ran out of the building running for her life. >> i look out the window and everybody is talking about get out, get out. >> reporter: who knocked on

we have dray clark who just arrived at penn station. how are the commuters reacting to the news there? >> reporter: not a good way to start your day from penn station. there is frustration for commuters trying to get to work this morning or wherever they are trying to go to find out that they will experience 30- minute delays or cancellations. penn station is busy this time of the morning. i will reiterate some of the father you shared this morning. eastbound l.i.r.r. service is canceled between penn station and jamaica. westbound or inbound l.i.r.r. customers between jamaica and penn station delays up to 30 minutes. in some cases, you may experience cancellations. there are signal problems happening near the east river tunnel. that is the sore spot. we know l.i.r.r. officials are trying to move and work on the problem as fast as they can. in the meantime, new york city transit is cross honoring fares on the e subway station and westbound on the 7 line as flushing, main street and woodside. a lot to figure out if you are accustomed to t

dray clark is live on the scene for us. >> good morning lori. police say that suspect fired using an automatic weapon. you can't see the crime scene because this detective vehicle was blocking the area. just down the block at jefferson and bushwick is where that exchange of gunfire happened between police and that suspect. no police officers were hurt. you can actually see just howe being hit. this is actually a gunshot in the unmarked police car with those officers arriving in this morning when they encountered that suspect. initially police were called to the area at 1:20 on madison street where there had been a arm. officers caught up with the jefferson. that is where that exchange of gunfire happened. when the gunfire stopped that suspect was hit in the leg and taken to kings county hospital where he's listed in stable condition. police did recover a weapon at the scene, and police tell us it is an automatic handgun. the officers involved in the shooting are from the 83rd police precinct. they were not hurt but were taken to the hospital as
