first influence correspondent claudia cowan live in california. claudia. >> hi, greta. this pounding rain and near hurricane-force winds just slammed into northern california today and provided plenty of dramatic pictures. all day long we have been watching the high surf just slam into the pier here in pacifica. some spots along the coast seeing waives as high as 27 feet. some of the inland areas up in sonoma and napa getting 9-inch of rain in this 24-hour long deluge. so much rain falling all at once. it caused widespread problems across northern california. roads were flooded. cars got stranded on freeways as some people make the best of things by getting around on a kayak. now, the storm also uprooted trees. in fact, we're told that a 12-year-old boy suffered a fractured arm when an 80-foot tree fell on him. that happened in santa cruz. power was knocked out all over the bay area. at last report 117,000 customers were still without power. authorities advising folks to stay off the roads if they can. especially up in the mountains where blizzard and whiteout condition

book award. >> i'm claudia rankine. a poet, a playwright. i also teach at pomona college. i see myself as a citizen, walking around, collecting stories. and using those stories to reflect our lives through poetry, through essays, creating these hybrid texts and plays that reflect back to us who we are. in my most recent book "citizen", i wanted to try to track the moments that disrupt interactions, especially between people of different races. the book contains two kinds of aggressions. what is often called micro- aggressions or small moments. but then i wanted to begin to understand how we get to these major moments, the murders of black men. these kind of moments in 2014 when you think "how did that happen? and i wanted to track it back and say people in their daily lives by believing and saying these small things, they will add up to major, major aggressions against people just because of the color of their skin. so the book tracks the small to the large. in line at the drugstore it's finally your turn and then it's

claudia cowan is live in pacifica, california, with more. hello, claudia. >> reporter: hi, shannon. the first major storm to hit northern california in six years is just drenching with this pounding rain and near hurricane force wind. perhaps you can see the rains slamming against the pacifica pier. it is popular with tourists and will be closed today for good reason. we could see waves as high as 27 feet along some parts of the coast, santa cruz to monterey. along with wind gusts from 50 to 6 miles per hour, along with eight inches of rain coming down in this area in the space of a day, 24 hours or so. since the storm moved into northern california overnight someplaces have seen a one or two inches fall per hour. that is a lot and the national weather service has issued all the relevant warns, flash floods, high surf, you name it. crews spent last days clearing storm drains and trimming branches near power lines and sandbagging low-lying businesses. trees have been uprooted and at last report 77,000 customers were without power. sinkholes, mudslides, rockslides are all very real co
