good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. a new shift is coming on at the police department at this hour. investigators have been here all night and morning long. they have been inside the police department conducting an interview with the 28-year-old suspect. police are still trying to piece together what lead up to the deadly assault. both the 28-year-old suspect and 24-year-old victim lived at an inhome residential care facility on the 1800 block of st. andrews place. for what i have been able to determine the facility is called the capri home and just an assisted living care facility. at 7:30 last night a worker called police. when police got to the home and paramedics arrived they pronounced the man dead. we don't know what type of care they were getting or how many people lived there. we don't know if any weapons were involved. investigators are still trying to piece all of that together.

tara. >> reporter: well, claudine, the u.s. district attorney's office has said it will try to decide as soon as possible whether to retry bonds on the counts that the jury was deadlocked upon. most legal experts agree that a retrial is most unlikely. the jury found bonds guilty of one obstruction of justice charge but hung on the three perjury charges regarding steroid use. bonds' attorney says he will try to get the guilty charge thrown out. now although he was smiling, bonds said quietly that he had nothing to celebrate. six of the 12 jurors did speak after the verdict. and when asked if bonds' demeanor or perception of arrogance hurt him, the jurors replied yes. >> in his grand jury testimony i think it did. he was evasive and didn't answer the question clearly. we used that against him. that was our evidence. >> reporter: in front of the grand jury bonds was repeatedly asked a yes or no question but would only give his first name, fred. bonds remains free while he awaits sentencing date. he does face a possible ten year pr

jade. >> reporter: claudine, firefighters are monitoring hot spots. it doesn't look like this home is destroyed but it is. the fire broke out a couple hours ago and the residents living in this home were very lucky. no phones in the home and no smoke detectors. the firefighters you are looking at poured water on the side house because the fire threatened the house next door. dispatch received a call about an outdoor house. we spoke to one of the occupants inside of the washington home. a man told us he walked down stairs to get ice cream when he smelled was a burning cigarette. that's when he knew something was wrong. he couldn't call for help because he doesn't have any phones in his home. luckily he was able to get himself and his girlfriend and birds out safely. >> we went down stairs to get ice cream. there was no smoke noticeable at the time. by the time i got the ice cream and went back upstairs above the garage, we go i smell smoke. >> flames destroyed the home and the cause is still under investigation at this hour. the american red cross is h

and ktvu's claudine wong is there as well. claudine, what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, pam, firefighters are still on scene. pg&e is still on scene. and this situation is still developing. you take a look down and you can see they're bringing in heavy equipment. they're still trying to deal with a power line issue that's out here. let's take you through what happened though. this is the home that caught on fire early this morning just after 1:00 this morning. but the fire was only the first part of this. i want to show you what's going on out here. there was a power line that was connected here. you can see the end of it up here that's still hanging. it has been cut down but it was basically laying across the street. so firefighters couldn't cross it. they had to go fight it from one side of the street and the other side of the street because that line was still hot. and that was just the first problem. there were also gas meters on either side of this house. and they blew when this fire began this morning. so when firefighters got here all they could

live in berkeley, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> time now 6:34. san francisco fire investigators still on the scene of a big fire in the mission district. it was first reported about 8:00 last night on mission street near valencia. now the building contains both homes and businesses. look at this. because of the strong winds look at the winds pushing it. the flames spread to two other buildings. talk about a hundred firefighters almost two hours to get this under control. one firefighter was actually hurt. he's listed in stable condition. investigators have been out there all night looking for the cause of that fire. >>> meantime about 100 tenants of a residential building in san francisco's tenderloin district they're in temporary housing this morning. that's after tuesday night's big fire at the franciscan tower on eddy street. four people had to be hospitalized. mostly for smoke inhalation. investigators searching for the cause but they don't think it was intentionally set. >>> later this morning the coroner's expected to tell us the name of a

good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, pam. this part of dwight way remains blocked off as does sacramento which is the main drag through berkeley. you can see heavy equipment behind me. there was talk from pg&e that they wanted to dig up the street because they were concerned about a gas line. it now appears they have decided not to do that. they have checked the meters and levels and say everything is fine. this is the house behind me. you can see the damage is significant. this is where the fire started. four people living inside this duplex are okay. they woke up to the flames just after 1:00 this morning. firefighters tell us those folks called 911, got out. but the troubles were just beginning for everyone. you're looking at video shot in the last couple of hours. those flip flames are coming from two gas meters that blew. also a downed power line in the middle of the street made fire fighting efforts difficult. crews had to avoid that serious hazard. i talked to the battalion chief a short time ago about the challenges.

ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong is on the scene this morning with more on what led up to this. claudine. >> reporter: well, pam, a lot of activity out here as police still try to figure out exactly what happened this morning. there are a lot of investigators out here over here on st. patrick way and ama door way. southbound 680 shut down this onramp to southbound 680. take you through what we now at this hour. a sergeant with the dublin police department was on patrol this morning when she called in to report a suspicious person. that is actually her vehicle over there. she called in at least two more times. once asked for help and once more report of shots fired. a violent confrontation apparently took place between her and the suspect in the lot of that dodge dealership. now police say it only took other deputies about a minute to get on scene. when they got here they found the deputy suffering from what they call a serious head injury and the suspect dead from shots apparently fired by that officer. what happened? that's all being figured out but police say it all happened p

claudine wong is in san jose for what may have lead up to that attack. >> reporter: we just left that scene within the last half hour. all is quiet there. police have left that scene and all of the focus turns to the police department. inside the police department interviews are under way with a 28-year-old suspect and possible witnesses. the victim was pronounced dead around 7:30 last night. this is video from the scene which is in the 1800 block of st. andrews place just about five miles from the police station. it all happened in a home that serves as a residential care facility. the victim lived there. according to police so did the man suspected of killing him. >> preliminary investigations suggests that the victim was assaulted or in some fashion confronted by a 28-year-old male who is also a resident of the facility and we suspect that the suspect and victim were acquainted because they both lived at that resident. >> reporter: police tole me this morning it appears the suspect and victim got into a dispute earlier in the day yesterday. they couldn't tell me what that dispute w
