claudine wong has moved to the back of the home where the fire did most of the damage, claudine wong? >> reporter: you can see the charred remains of what is left of this house and firefighters are still keeping an eye on things incase it flares up. that building is slanted and we had a partial roof collapse this morning and it caused some big concerns and they had to get the firefighters out. we can tell you no firefighters were hurt but the five people inside that building have defined a place to live. this is something you will only see on 2. firefighters first got the call and when they got on the scene they realized they were dealing with heavy flames and police officers had to evacuate one of the residents who was in a wheelchair for the people who got out on their own. in the end, 39 firefighters came to fight this fire and they said they are not leaving any time soon. >> we will be on scene for a while and when we get daylight, we will be able to assess the structure and determine what is safe to enter and determine its status and continue our fire investigation. >> again back

claudine. >> reporter: that firefighter is okay. this is a very active scene out here. let me give you a look at what is going on. you can see all the water used to fight this fire out in front filling like a parking lot. firefighters still there. they just turned off the aerial hoses. if you want to get a good idea where this fire started all you have to do is look into the corner. that is where the area is they think this fire actually started. at its height this fire was  huge. i want to show you video of the fire. you can see the flames shooting out of the roof of this strip mall. firefighters tell me this all started just after 1:00. someone drove by and saw smoke. when they got out here they realized they were dealing with a much bigger situation. this fire has been burning for some time but had been hidden in the attic. when they opened up the roof, that's is what they got these huge flames coming up and out. there were 50 firefighters out here fighting this fire. there are two apartment complexes behind this strip mall. one of them did have to be evacuated. >>

claudine. >> reporter: fortunately that firefighter will be okay. let me show you the scene right now. still very active out here. this union city strip mall. you can see the fire fighters still in place. you can take a look over the roof line you can still see white smoke coming up. most of the fire was in that roof line. i want to show you video of this fire. it was huge. the flames at their height were really going. this started just after 1:00 this morning. that is when they got the call. they do belief at this point this fire was burning for quite awhile before it was discovered. it took about 90 minutes to get it out. about ten businesses effected by this fire. and i want to give you a look at the damage. because firefighters just took us upright into these businesses so we could get a look at what the fire did. you can see the damage is extensive. there is also a roof collapse at this fire roof caved in on top of the businesses. you can see there will be a lot of cleanup a lot of rebuilding that will have to be done. in the meantime, though,

claudine wong has more. >> reporter: good morning, tori. we just got out of the hayward police department from this press conference. we talked about what could be a break in this case. we're in kind of a waiting game, though. they said they are waiting for results from dna testing but that could take several weeks. they are looking at a small bone that they think could belong to her. let's talk about how she got her. her days goes back to 1988. that's when she went missing. she was 9 years old when she was kidnapped outside grocery store. police say this may not be the answer but they are certainly looking into it. >> from the investigators that i spoke with, she was -- i don't know what to say. she understood the gravity and the -- is wanting to find closure in whichever way. >> reporter: that was sergeant eric krim talking to garecht's mother about this possible break. how did this happen? well, 16-year-old joanne hobson was also kidnapped from stockton. earlier this year her family got closure in the case when her remains were found in
