we go to claudio lavanga in brussels. good to see you again, claudio. let's start with the manhunt for abdeslam. what do we know about the search and how confident are authorities that he's even in belgium? >> reporter: good morning, chris. well, the interior minister of belgium appeared on belgian national television last night saying that it is not just about salah abdeslam, the raising of the terror alert to the highest level. now, they said there may be more people involved, otherwise the prime minister wouldn't have said that what they fear is a coordinated attack carried out by multiple people on multiple occasions in brussels. there is no real news on the hunt of salah abdeslam, but for the brother of salah, mohammad, who still lives here in brussels in the family home in the neighborhood of molenbeek gave another interview to belgian television saying, calling for his brother once again to turn himself in. to go to the police, because what he says is that he beliefs that he was not radicalized, that he hasn't seen the signs of radicalization on

claudio lavanga joins me now. the lockdown is sort of being lifted but the manhunt continues.imagine there's still a lot of apprehension in brussels. >> reporter: yes, there is, steve. while life is slowly going back to normal. one re-opening, today, 35 out of the 69 subway stations here in the city, re-opened to the public. they were heavily guarded by 200 police officers. they were standing guard in front of the entrances and the platforms, on the trains. we've seen a lot of people taking the subway today. obviously they were reassured by the sight of the extra police officers and soldiers. also 160 schools that were closed on monday and tuesday, across the city, also reopened. again, guarded by 300 police officers that were making sure that the teachers and the pupils were safe there. also, let's say that all this, as you said, is happening while there is a manhunt of salah abdeslam, the man linked to the terror attacks. they've been looking for him for the past ten days. yesterday they said they were also looking for the second suspect. clearly it seems like authorities do

nbc's claudio lavanga is live for us in brussels where those raids took place. at's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, jose. we are being told the national security council is meeting right now. then we expect them to hold a press conference shortly after that. hopefully we will learn a little more information about this very large anti-terror operation that has been going on since last night. what we know is that a total of 29 raids were carried out since last night. 24 in brussels in the area around brussels. thr one about 25 miles, and another two elsewhere. a total of 21 people have been arrested. we don't know if they've been charged, linked to terrorism or to the paris attacks. hopefully we'll know from the press conference that's about to come up. as you said, salah abdelslam was not among them, and that is one of the reasons why of course the terror threat here is still on level four, the highest here. that's also why the u.s. and canadian embassies released a statement saying that they are closed for the day. they'll only perform extraordinary servic

nbc's claudio lavanga joins me from brussels, belgium. we are expecting a news conference from the belgian prime minister at any moment. we had one last night where he talked about what it meant for this city to be on lockdown. what are the expectations about this latest conference? >> reporter: we have been waiting for about three hours for that press conference to start. obviously there is very important information to share. literally ten minutes ago the federal prosecution office in the meantime issued a statement in which they said that one of the 21 people that have been arrested during these 29 raids since last night has been charged with participating to a terrorist organization, in particular with clear links to the paris attacks. so that's very important developments there. another thing that this statement is saying is that two other people out of those 21 are still being detained, pending further investigation. the judge will rule on them tomorrow. the other ones have been released. of course we are waiting for the press confe

claudio lavanga is live in brussels.out the latest on the investigation there. >> reporter: we're going to get an update on the raids in a little more than two hours. the interior minister who's returning all of this and running this investigation has been releasing them on a day to day basis. but latest numbers are now at more than 1,000, in fact almost 1,100 of these raids or number of houses that they have gone into. they've also had quite a few arrests. let me take a check of the exact number here. 139 interrogations. 117 people that they have taken into custody. you can bet in a couple of hours those will go up. they've been averaging, as you can see, about 100 of these police searches a day. also at this press conference the key question is surely going to be about that suicide belt that was found belt in a suburban neighborhood of paris yesterday by a street cleaner amid some garbage. the question is, could it possibly be linked somehow to salah abdelslam. he is the most wanted person in europe. he is the subject

want to go to nbc's claudio lavanga with more on what happened. bring us up to speed on the investigation from brussels. >> reporter: well, we spoke to the federal prosecution office here who said the raids this morning or overnight were in fact, nine and not six or seven as previously stated. now, they specified they were not really raids, they were more like house searches. there was no surprise factor or they didn't bring down doors, there was no exchange of fire. they went to the property, they were looking for specific people. they took them in for questioning and they will tell us tomorrow whether anybody is going to be under arrest. let me tell you how these were divided. six raids or house searches were targeting the acquaintances of bilal hafdi, one of the three suicide bombers who exploded, activated the explosive vest outside of the stadium in paris. well, now seven people were taken away for questioning and they said that hafdi had been under investigation for awhile much before, much longer before the attack in paris because he came u

. >>> joining me now, claudio lavanga. this is andrea mitchell reporting from washington. going on along the french side, i believe, of the border with belgium, and we are also being told by intelligence sources here in washington that the belgian officials missed several opportunities to get some of these guys before the attack. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, they did. the federal prosecution office just issued a news statement in which it said that the raids that took place overnight into the early hours of this morning were in fact nine, not six or seven as previously said. now six of them were in connection to one of the three suicide bombers last friday outside of the stadium in france. apparently the prosecution has said that hafdi has been under investigation since he left belgium to syria at the beginning of the year. this of course raises even more questions than answers. how is it possible that such a guy under surveillance, under investigation, could just travel back to europe maybe passing through belgium, ended up in paris. he cooperated in this very
