the fire is about 15 minutes away from clayton. this is the nearest town here. what firefighters are doing today is extreme heat hundred + temperatures and a lot of dry vegetation here. let's go ahead and roll some video and show you the fire. >> you can see the fire is in thick vegetation of creek canyon road they had to helicopters up for the past several hours pumping water in mostly hot spots. you can see they're dealing with some really steep terrain and that's making it harder on fire fighters who can even track in the water they have to come up the hill. in this thick vegetation they also to deal with snakes and tarantulas. on top of that the extreme heat let's take a listen to what cal fire had to say about the current challenges. the challenge today will remain the heat and rugged terrain. the hierarchy go sometimes the more exposed to the sun and it's hard to stay hydrated you can only carry so much water. we have people that are cutting hemline there might be one firefighter of 10 that's assigned to go up and down help bring extra water. they can even

good morning, clayton. >> reporter: good morning, juju. one of those three men is now in lockup at this colorado dale. police are still looking for tracy province and john mccluskey. they're also looking for the fiance of one of them. police say with her help two convicted murderers are on the loose. this real-life prison break began when mccluskey, province, and a third convict named daniel renwick cut through the fence of a medium security prison at kingman. next they kidnapped two big rig drivers at gunpoint demanding a ride to flagstaff. >> it is thought that they are still in the region in arizona. >> reporter: renwick split from the others and made it to colorado. he got into a shoot-out with cops who rammed his car and made the arrest. mccluskey, province and welsh were last spotted in phoenix withdrawing money from atms. >> hopefully, they'll surrender and their family will talk to them and give them that good advice. ultimately, we don't want anybody to get hurt. >> reporter: arizona officials are blaming the security breakdown on

clayton sandell has the latest now on the search. >> reporter: this is all that's left of the burned-outxico police found the bodies of linda and gary haas. authorities say these fugitives, on the run, may be to blame. >> we consider them extremely armed and dangerous and we pray upon the public to be vigilant. >> reporter: convicted felons tracy province, john mccluskey and daniel renwick busted out of this kingman, arizona, prison july 30th. had help from an alleged accomplice, mccluskey's fiance and cousin, police say she tossed the men wire cutters so they could slice through the fence. from there they hijacked a big rig at gunpoint, driving to flagstaff. they were later seen in phoenix. gary and linda haas were found dead wednesday in new mexico. the couple's car found 100 miles away in albuquerque. in the meantime, renwick was recaptured last weekend in colorado. the others are still on the loose. >> one of the huge difficulties in being a fugitive is that you have to keep on the move because the longer you stay any place, the odds of you getting caught are actually even greater. >

the fire started around 4:00 near the last house down curry canyon road near clayton on the east slope of mount deab employee. this is a sparsely populated area that has more cows and horses than people. the fire is mostly burning up vegetation, grass and pushes. it spread quickly at first because a downed power line initially kept firefighters from getting to the scene. pg&e had to come out and secure the power line before those firefighters could get past it. after that firefighters were able to quickly begin battling flames. a calm wind helped them surround the fire within a few hours. >> there was one immediate threat to one home up in the fire area, that home was protected and saved, and at this point no further homes are threatened. >> reporter: in a nutshell what have you done to contain this fire. >> right now actively we had aircraft working through the day, dozers, fire engines, hand crews that put in hose lines in to try to mitigate this, the grass and brush and trees and terrain that we have with the hills, it becomes tripping hazards and safety concerns with the firefighte
