abc's clayton sandell is in crescent city, california, where it inflicted the most damage. >> the waves destroying the marina. experts tell us if the same 8.9 quake happened off our shores, it could drive a 20 to 30-foot wall of water as far as two miles inland. >> reporter: and it's not just the west coast where a damaging earthquake could strike. the entire country is crisscrossed with faults, though none as potentially dangerous as in california. the new madrid fault runs from st. louis to memphis, and the ramapo fault runs through pennsylvania, new york, and new jersey, one tentacle passing right through manhattan. even a moderate ramapo earthquake could cause major damage to an area that is home to millions. earthquake experts say that the strongest magnitude quake that could hit the mainland of the u.s. is around 8, but there are geological conditions in alaska and off the coast of washington and oregon where a 9 or higher could occur and as bianna was saying has occurred in the past, and, of course, that would be even stronger than the one that wreaked so much havoc in japan. >>

let's go to clayton sandell who has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. the government has declared a state of emergency in several northern california counties. you can see why. the waves just destroyed this harbor, taking out the docks and piles boats on top of one another. and these waves have also become deadly, taking the life of one 25-year-old man, brandon weber, who was swept out to sea. the waves came fast. unleashed in a blast of energy that powered across the pacific. four tsunami waves hit hawaii, causing minor damage before pushing through the darkness with the speed of a jetliner, headed straight for the west coast. in northern california and oregon coastal town, sirens warned thousands to evacuate. >> my house might not be here. i'm sorry. >> reporter: people who missed the sirens, got a reminder from the sheriff to get out. in southern california, lifeguards closed the beaches. >> my husband told us to wait up on high ground. but here we are right at the beach front. >> reporter: but up and down the coast, some people ignored the warnings.

the video has gone viral so clayton sandell went there to see what's up. >> reporter: one things forure -- >> what is that? >> reporter: -- people in lafayette, colorado don't know what they saw last week hovering above their homes. >> i don't think it was an airplane. >> it was this weird energy. >> reporter: lester valdez saw the light, along with all of his neighbors. >> i have never witnessed anything like that. >> reporter: he said it was like those tiny ships of "close encounters of the third time." >> they kind of got into a pattern. >> reporter: leroy vandervet and his song nick managed to capture them on camera. >> it was completely quiet. no noise at all. >> reporter: leroy doesn't know what it was, but he is sure that it wasn't a satellite, wasn't a helicopter and he says it it wasn't an airplane. they say there must be a perfectly good explanation. >> the idea of it actually being an alien spacecraft is pretty weird. >> reporter: beyond that it's still a mystery, we tried calling the faa for help. they refused to speak with us. it is possible this is all a hoax, after all
