here's clayton sandell. >> reporter: new mexico's biggest wildfire on record grew another 14,000 acres since saturday. now up to 355 square miles. but 18 days after lightning sparked this blaze, there is progress. starting tomorrow evacuated residents can go home although smoke will still make for unhealthy breathing. across the west fires are being driven by a triple punch of drought, winds and hot temperatures. but it's not just the weather. for most of the last century, the strategy for fighting forest fires was to put them out quickly, a policy that experts say backfired. >> because we've suppressed fire in the west, we now have old stands of timber, and those are potentially catastrophic wildfires. >> reporter: now, fires that aren't threatening homes or towns are surrounded, allowed to burn out. >> fire can help to rejuvenate the natural ecosystem. >> reporter: this part of new mexico has burned before, and that's helping slow this blaze but firefighters say it will be weeks before they get the upper hand, clayton sandell, denver. >>> i want to bring in meteorologist ginger zee.
