team coverage starting with amy hollyfield at a staging area in clayton. amy? >> i have a new update. the fire doubled overnight and now is 1,500 acres. you can see how active it is in the dark. it is still raging strongly and is very powerful, an active fire. firefighters are very busy. they say more firefighters from across the state are on the way. right now. they say they have a lot of work. they still want to build eight miles of fire line around the fire. they say it is about 10 percent contained. it started at 1:30 yesterday afternoon along morgan territory road on the east side of mt. diablo near clayton. the vegetation there is very dry and discussion -- susceptible to fire. this spread in a hurry. it destroys one outbuilding but they kept it from reaching hopes. they have told some people in clayton they do need testify -- need to evacuate. one firefighter hurt his foot but is expected to be okay. it is not a bun. it is steep terrain. 300 firefighters are on the line and that number is expected to grow significantly today as help is on the way. s

right now we're in clayton looking south at mt. diablo. you can see the fire continues to burn giving off that glow in this early morning dark sky. it is now burning up at the peak of mt. diablo where the old lookout building and beacon light are. we spoke with cal fire, they tell us they do not think the fire will damage or destroy that structure because there's a pretty big parking lot that separates it from the wildlands and they have enough resources to protect. the fire did grow overnight, almost doubled in size. yesterday the fire had burned 800 acres, right now it's at 1,500. still threatening 100 homes. it's only 10% contained. there are 300 firefighters on the scene. i spoke with the battalion chief. they ordered a lot more resources, as many as 300 more firefighters expected to come in as well as more engines, dozers and at 8:00 they will have more aircraft to dump water and retardant. they hope to have containment in a couple days. they have a good eight miles of fire lines to put down. what makes this fire so difficult as you w

just outside of clayton. you are looking up toward mt. diablo where this hillsidison f speaking with a representative from cal fire, he is telling me that parts of this fire have now burned up close to the summit of mt. diablo. that is about 3800 feet. more help is coming to try to contain the flames. i'm told 15 strike teams. cal fire strike teams from around the state will be joining this effort later on today. that means 100 extra firefighters joining in. there have also been throughout the night a number of hand crews that have stayed out here. they tried to create control lines and corral this fire and stop its spread. let me show you the scene from yesterday. this fire is 10% contained. after it broke out at 1:45 yesterday afternoon near morgan territory road. throughout the day, helicopters and air tankers were making drops on this fire. evacuations were ordered for about 100 or so homes. as the homes and ranches were threatened in this area so far the good news no buildings have been lost in this fire. the dry brush in this area a

the town of clayton is under evacuation orders as 50 to 75 homes in that area are threatened. nbc meteorologist bill karins is here with a look at that. they need to get everything there -- one fire after another. >> they need a rainy season. it started around 1:00 p.m. yesterday and by 7:00 p.m. it had quickly spread and went right up the east side of mt. elle diablo and burning in elle diablo state park to the south of the clayton area. forecast, 85. north winds, 5 to 10, still dry. shouldn't be that windy but the bone dry conditions and low humidity won't help the firefighters. no rain in the forecast for this region. only 15 to 20 miles away from downtown san francisco. by the way the crow flies but definitely no help on the weather whatsoever. all the rainy weather has been stuck in areas of arizona with more humid and cloudy conditions but none of that will move through central and northern california. high pressure providing very warm conditions for that region and it's going to be 95 today in medford and 84 in boise and, you know, just the cooler spots are actually in

diablo and near the town clayton. crews ahead good progress last night getting 70 percent of the fire area surrounded with the safety zone and they hoped to finish digging out that fire line by friday. a woman stayed with her daughter during the fire and got her family thinking. >> my children want me to move closer to town because it is a long way out here but i of although it. i do. it is a beautiful area. >> the couple love it, too, and say when they pulled into the drive they knew it was safe to be here. >> the birds are singing so it is gone. >> just to have a cup of tea and sit in my own chair. >> the evacuation orders have been lifted and no homes were damaged. they were all saved which is why so many signs of gratitude around clayton today. they will leave some firefighters out there today and tomorrow. they want to dig out the line around the entire area so they think that will happen by friday. >> a lost firefighters risked their lives while fight the fire and became the victims of low-life crooks who broke
