of the clayton fire tore through the town of lower like yesterday. it is so small compared to fires of last year. this one is about a few miles south of clearlake. 1500 structures are threatened. it is burning to the east. that is good because it is mostly open space. you see the other three larger fire zones from last year's big fires in lake county. the rocky founder -- fire and the jerusalem fire consumed almost 100,000 acres. this is the third worst wildfire in state history when you measure it by structures this droid -- destroyed. it destroyed nearly 2000 structures more than 76 76,000 acres were charred. four fires in two years for a community that is become accustomed to rebuilding. >>> officials say the fire is burning away from the more populated areas at this hour. you never know how the winds will shift. a lot of people are still not able to return to their homes if they have one. there are several in evacuation centers open in the lower lake at clearlake areas. they include healthy bill high school, seventh-day adventist church in the tw

we know the clayton fire, again, on saturday off highway 29 near clayton creek and late yesterday afternoon the strong winds, high temperatures lead to spot fires in the area. here in lower lake on main street we had a post office, a winery, and several businesses that were burned down as a result of that fire. and as is the case with a lot of wild fires, the weather can make things unpredictable. i spoke with cal fire about the specific issue. >> we don't have control of is our biggest nemesis and that's the weather. that's exactly what happened yesterday. i'm waiting to get a weather report about could it reoccur again today. the fire, obviously, is still an active fire. it's nothing like we saw yesterday afternoon. >> no updates at this time. cal fire expects the numbers to change as they get new information hopefully later this morning. >> thank you so much. >>> and several strike teams from the bay area have been deployed to help fight the clayton fire. including san francisco firefighters. when the call came for help, the city's fire department rushed to respond with five engines. lea

the clayton fire came through this area. embers dropped down on buildings and there wasn't a whole lot that firefighters could do to save them. this building in particular was the home to a charity organization that we all know pretty well. you can see here on the sign this was the home of habitat for humanity of lake county. obviously, this is an organization that builds homes for people in need. they are in the business, of course, of helping others, and now clearly after this fire came through here their building is gone. they are the ones in need of help. >> the unpredictability of the clayton fire took so many people by surprise. todd and carrie may stayed as long as they could. they had to pack up their belongings and leave with their pets. their neighbor was on the phone when he spotted flames coming his way, so he hung up and fled the area. >> i told them we got fire in our backyard and i got to go. >> now i think we'll leave. >> the may family says the worst part is leaving their home not knowing if they will ever s

meyer -- clayton fire smoke. have moderate air quality. overnight, mid-50s for fairfield, 550 in redwood city, oak and 560, san jose 570. we have great, comfortable sleeping weather. a low-pressure area passing by. that's the guy that whipped up the winds in the lake county yesterday. that's why the fire spread so rapidly. that's moving out and that's why the winds are not as strong today but there's another low- pressure area later this week. that will decreased temperatures a little bit but elevate the winds starting thursday and friday. futurecast says tomorrow morning, hot and sunny in lake county but for many the issue will be fog and low cloud cover widespread near the water. it will burn off for a cool afternoon near the water with highs in the low 70s. low cloud coverage tonight. some drizzle in the city and along the coast as well. sunny and hot tomorrow away from the water with 90s returning. if you didn't hit 900 today, you will tomorrow. markedly warmer away from the water compared to the coast. here

so far the clayton fire has destroyed at least 175 homes. a number of businesses also leveled by the fire. for people in this community many of them are trying to recover from the valley fire that swept through middletown just a year ago. for a lot of people it is hard to understand why someone would set the fire. >> i think everyone in lake county knew someone that lost a home. this is going to be the same thing. lower lake is a small community. >> reporter: all of those folks who ran from their homes, packed up what they could and got out as this fire exploded in size. all of them staying at a number of shelters set up nearby. there is no word yet from officials on when all of those evacuees may be allowed to return. the latest word is it is too dangerous. there is no power or water. we did get good news as we were talking about here, i spoke with a member of cal fire and they feel like they made some progress overnight with this fire. but, it still stands at 4000 acres and they are being cautious about the fire. >> our of thoughts are wit

the small red area is where the clayton fire is burning right now. it's burning between 3 large fires that broke out there last year. a large green area on the map is the perimeter of the rocky fire started in late june last year. the rocky fire burned nearly 70,000 acres and destroyed 43 homes. a month later it percentage with the jerusalem fire marked by that purple shaded area. the cause of the rocky fire was determined to be a faulty gas powered water heater. then just weeks later the valley fire broke out which is the pink area on the map. last week we learned a faulty wiring on a hot tub sparked that fire. >>> let's bring in our chief meteorologist bill martin. he's been tracking the conditions. it's so interesting bill when you see the pictures from our helicopter it's very difficult to see the flames. >> right. we were talking about that earlier frank. obviously 4,000-acre fire even though the big flames are out we got a live chopper shot right now sky fox is up now. they are actively, you don't see flames. there's a little bit of flame but t

the clayton fire is 35% contained now.t has remained about the same size over the past day or so around 4,000 acres. more than 175 homes and other buildings are destroyed in lower lake and surrounding areas. anne makovec reports. >> reporter: damin pashilk's hearing is 1:15 this afternoon at the superior court house in lakeport. he was a prison firefighter. he served five years for drugs and firms charges. during that time -- firearms charges. during that time the state trained him as a prisoner firefighter. he has had six parole violations. the charges he is facing today carry enhancements that could increase his punishment if he is indeed convicted. that's because of the homes and businesses destroyed in the fire he is accused of setting. people who live in the burn area are reeling. >> a lot of the people here that my kids grew up with all have children. they were all friends together and now they have nothing. it's all for one person's foolishness? >> reporter: those whose homes are still standing are worried about loo
