kris van cleave is following the investigation of the crash. chris, good morning to you. if this happened the way officials say it did, what went terribly wrong here? reporter: wel goorning. it appears this was a horrific mistake at a time when tensions were running very high and the iranian military was on high alert. certainly there are questions. take a look at this. this is from flight radar 24. a flight tracking website here in the u.s. notice it observed nine other flights leaving the airport that morning before the shoot down. nearly all of them following the same path as flight 752. a security camera captured these dramatic images of the burning wreckage from ukraine flight 752 raining down. the plane headed to kiev identified itself as a commercial airliner and flying away from the conflict zone. but cbs news has learned, as the boeing 737 climbed, u.s. intelligence picked up signals of iranian radar locking on to the plane. the ment lites tewoll by xpsion of impact. other videos show the burning plane as it comes crashing down in a ball of fire. federal official

kris van cleave leads off our coverage tonight in calabasas, california. >> reporter: new video appears to show kobe bryant's helicopter circling just minutes before the crash that killed all nine aboard. the n.t.s.b. used a helicopter today to airlift key pieces of wreckage out of the rugged hillside crash site, while investigators hunted for smaller items. investigators are pouring over pilot ara zobayan's history and helicopter maintenance records. preliminary flight data shows the trip started normally. about 15 minutes later, the pilot began to circle. the weather was getting worse as he waited 12 minutes for air traffic control to clear him onward. about 9:40, flying below the clouds, zobayan asked controllers to track him on radar, but he was too low. four minutes later, radioing he was climbing to go above the layer of clouds. flying now in potentially blinding fog, he reached 2,300 feet before turning left. in its final 12 second, the helicopter began the dive, falling at nearly 5,000 feet per minute. the last recorded speed, about 184 mph. n.b.a. star lebron james spoke to bry

here's cbs news transport correspondent kris van cleave.ssume that the us and canada being such close allies have been sharing intelligence on this and it seems to line up. what we are hearing is that us intelligence saw through satellite and other intelligence that the iranians activated a radar signal and fired those missiles as you guys have reported. and that seems to track with what the prime minister said there, as he was going for a full and open investigation and certainly the us would like to see that too. understanding how the accident at the very least prevent it, perhaps, from happening again. we also note that this morning, federal officials here in the us and various agencies were briefed on this intelligence. so, it appears that this started to come into focus overnight, that we were in fact looking at a missile strike. and are your sources suggesting that this was a mistake? the indications here are that the plane was mistakenly targeted. one of the things that still working on figuring out is how far was this aeroplane from
