but a study by the buckeye institute in ohio found that students involved in the cleveland program areaining access to a more integrated school experience. and i -- this is very important, that they have this kind of experience. i know that my children -- this program wasn't available when i was mayor and probably wouldn't have been eligible for it, but i'll never forget that my son george was the only white kid in his class in a major work program in the city of cleveland and i have to tell you that he is a different person because of the fact that he had that experience. my daughter was one of two white kids that were in a class that was all african-american. the program was terrific and they took advantage of it, but they had a learning experience that they wouldn't have had if it hadn't of been nor this program that brought kids together -- for this program that brought kids together for a special program. in his closing testimony before our committee, former mayor anthony williams said -- quote -- "quite frankly, i'm befuddled by the proposal to have the program die by attrition.
