cleveland. my name is phillip hedayatnia, i'm a junior at hawken school and i'm a proud member of the city club youth forum council. and thank you very much for coming to see our panelists today. our goal at the youth forum council is will the identical to that of the city club. it's to host conversations debates and discussions that empower us to engage in further understanding of the world around us and the people who comprise the. it's for that reason it is my pleasure to introduce our forum today entitled a conversation on race. poet langston hughes wrote in his piece democracy that freedom is a strong seed planted in a great need. i live here too i want freedom just as you. it may be safe to say that in the age we live in today in many ways freedom has been granted teresa people have been subjected to oppression throughout our nation since you. but there's a difference between in some cases freedom and liberty. freedom of being a state of being, that the being able to make decisions without

but he did important things for cleveland. >> host: you rose to be one of the most important if not theost important of the democratic consultants in the state of illinois. you were there for a long period of time, generally successful. illinois now is in a pretty rough economic situation rated 50th in its credit rating of any major city i've ever been to in the trite. he was one of the top states during the great recession and as it walked into this desperate situation where today -- >> guest: a lot of them tied in together. the situation is one of the reasons why the state pension system filtered down in many ways. they have their own pension issue fighting their way out of it but the states centric problems are associated with the city finances that have contributed. >> there is no doubt that there is a legacy and i can see the result of both republican administrations and democratic administrations making unaffordable deals with public employee unions. we went through the era of the two governors that went to prison and some irresponsibility expanding the state's obligations. >> but

a lot of the iconic structures that have brought back downtown cleveland, revived downtown cleveland, the stadium, the rock 'n' roll museum, have their roots in his efforts to bring those things there, and the did other things in cleveland that were quite positive. you may have overstated time and there were problems at the end involving an associate but i would not be one to suggest that either cleveland's demise was his responsibility or that he didn't do anything good for cleveland, and i am realistic about the fact that no one is all good or all bad, all accomplished and without flaw. that's not in the way it is. i actually think he was an idealistic guy, not a perfect guy, but he helped get some important things done for that city and inspired people in an important way. so, that's not one of the campaigns i would say i was sorry that i did. i was happy i did that race. i might have advised him to leave also earlier than he did, but i think he did important things for cleveland. >> host: let's widen this. this is still your prewhite house phase. let's widen the list. you were one

city of cleveland has 40 snow removal crews out. there's a parking ban in place. martin is in cleveland with the latest. >> reporter: good morning john and christine. when it's all said and done cleveland isn't likely to be the leader in the clubhouse, especially when it comes to snowfall in this particular snowstorm. but like a lot of the cities and people being impacted it's the biggest snow fall already this winter season. it's a problem. the streets here are covered with snow. the snowplows have not been able to keep up with the rate of snow coming down. temperatures have been critical and will be critical in this storm. it had been hovering around the freezing point and that allows a lot of moisture to be in the air which creates a lot of snow. it's cooled down but the wind is picking up. that's a problem because it causes drifting and that too makes it a difficult issue when it comes to snowplows picking up. when it was sunday this is not a problem but now that it's monday it's a problem. especially for morning commutes and schools and air travel. air travel

. >> when we travel to cleveland, ohio, to shoot "lockup: extended stay" at the cuyahoga county corrections center, we met one inmate who didn't fit that mold. he was also segregated from everybody else. >> i can't be in a block with nobody, i got to be in a cell by myself all day. >> because i'm high profile, i got to be separated from everybody else. >> inmate wolford we have in admin seg, administration significant segregation, due to his high-profile case and he has chronic problems adjusting to general populations. >> because all the people i probably fought and the things i got into since i've been here. it's hard to place me. >> robert wolford's reputation at the jail dates back to six years earlier when he was here on a murder charge. he eventually pled guilty to a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter and was sent to prison to serve a 26-year sentence. the victim was a homeless man. >> i gave him some drugs. he told me to pay me back later so i trusted him. i come back to get the money, didn't have it, told me he ain't paying me. we get into a fight. when i seen him reaching, t

it's sort of like the cleveland clinic and cleveland state university in downtown cleveland. you go through downtown leveled the boards all over, guys with brown paper bags and then you see the cleveland clinic beautiful buildings, just lovely. and cleveland state university which i always put a c afterwardses, there's in outside indication to in cleveland believe me. and why are they doing well? their 501(c)(3)s, tax exempt activity does well in high-tax environments and in california your one tax exempt activity is owning a home owning a building, because you get the unrealized capital gains. so there's a lot else going on besides just taxes. look at the migration patterns from california. california was a larger share of the u.s. ten years ago than it is today. and its declining happening faster and faster. if you look at the time series of california. when we did prop 13 and then got rid of -- indexes the income tax and got rift of the gift and estate tax in california, the spending limits. you can't believe the growth in california from 1970 through 1990. and then all of

. >> in the heart of downtown cleveland, sits an 11-story tall half block wide symbol of law and order. the cuyahoga county correction center. >> face the wall! >> about 30,000 men and women from the city and outlying areas are booked into this jail each year. the majority will be released within 24 hours. but about 2,200 occupied beds here for an indefinite period, most are only accused of crimes and are awaiting trial for resolution of their cases. and like cleveland itself, the jail can be said to have tough neighborhoods of its own, especially the tenth floor. >> this is our maximum security floor. for the most part, that is where we how's our problematic inmates, inmates in some type of disciplinary lockup and we have our individuals that are here on high profile charges. >> the floor is managed by the special response team or sert, a tactical unit trained in the use of riot gear and controlling high risk inmates. >> we like to keep them close to our problems. that's kind of why they manage the floor. >> and problems do occur here. sert has just been called to a fight. little do t

today we have news out of cleveland, ohio. the cleveland browns football team got a new logo. time the thing to know about the cleveland browns didn't have a log organization. the helmet is their logo. for awhile they had this guy, browny elf until a new owner bought the team in 1961 and they got rid of the embarrassing elf. since then, their look has been this. nothing. right? no logo, orange helmet with a brown and white stripe. that is it. in 2013, the cleveland browns decided it is time to update our style. so for the past two years, they've been working on a revamp, trying out different looks. and today, they were finally ready to unveil the new and improved browns' logo. before i show it to you, remember, here is what it was up until today. you got it? and now, as of today, here's the new one. ta-dah! see that? amazing. maybe you don't see the difference. look at them side by side. see? the orange. come on, it has a different feel. it's so much oranger-ish. as the browns announced today that the orange "matches the passion of our fans and city," we were all left to absor
