he was raised in poverty himself here in cleveland. grew up in one of the most degraded neighborhoods in public housing in central. the neighborhood. so he had kind of a unique view on the problems of urban america as far as major politicians are concerned. he will understood that problems of adequate housing and others for residents in cleveland, but he knew that cleveland itself could not recover if its water quality continued to diminish and particularly if air quality continued to diminish. unlike many politicians of the era, when he spoke about the problems of urban america, he completely mingled the urban crisis with the environmental crisis. he tended to talk about both at the same time. solutions to one problem were not going to solve the problems of urban america. you had to deal with all of these problems at once. they were all interconnected. the day after the cuyahoga fire on a sunday morning, so on a monday morning, he calls his -- had his staff call together the local press and take them on what my brother richard and i c

there is a lot of bridges in cleveland. downtown cleveland is to my left. to my right is ohio city neighborhood in the city of cleveland. we are sitting down in the area called the flats, which are the lands right along the cuyahoga river. they run up several miles. this is the former industrial area of the city of cleveland, and 50 years ago on june 22, 1969, there was a fire on the cuyahoga river at the end of navigation, couple of miles south of here, end of navigation meaning boats could not go farther upstream. this is where a couple of low railroad trestles blocked some debris that was coming downstream, which is not unusual. the piers from the bridge got soaked in oil, which also was not unusual, and then there was a spark, perhaps from a passing train. we don't know exactly what set off the fire, and the trestles burned for about 20 minutes or a half an hour. fire ere doused by both a boat and from crews on the shore . photographers didn't get there in time to give us a picture of the cuyahoga burning that time, but eventually news about the cuyahog

narrator: the cuyahoga very nearly encircles cleveland.00-mile water course etches an arc from the east, flowing south, curving west, worrying its way through the glacial valleys and flowing due north to lake erie. the river finds its beginning in two branches, the northernmost being the east branch located in a county north of highway 6. the source is hidden here in a wooded, marshy area. ♪ the shallow, quiet pools are barely visible. even in the spring of the year, there is no observable flow of water. yet, nudged by the slope and contour of the land, the water does begin to move, ever so slowly. amazingly, within 100 yards of the beginning, the stream begins to take form. here, the river is surrounded by wildlife and wild flowers. ♪ the river cannot hide in wooded seclusion for very long. a mile from its source, it breaks out into the open looking more like a tiny run than a river. the cuyahoga pushes its way to the south, largely ignored by man, who merely bridges the stream where roads must cross. the cuyahoga, true to its name, shows

we went to the closest major waterway we knew in the area of cleveland, and what we found was that everyay, because of what we do, the crooked river dies. the cuyahoga river, as most think of it, the brown stream that meets lake erie, an industrial waterway, its banks populated by steel mills and factories, its channel filled with ships and tugs. ♪ the cuyahoga river, as it reaches lake erie, after a 100-mile twisting and turning journey from its headwaters, is an exhausted stream, abused and misused by man and his machines. ♪ without the cuyahoga, the sprawling megalopolis of cleveland-akron would not exist. the river was the reason for originally settling this portion of the western reserve in the 1780's. the river, called crooked by the delaware indians, provided a waterway to the interior of ohio, and so man came and continued coming. until today, nearly two million people live and work in the river basin. in creating this urban complex, man has used the river as men have always used rivers. the flow has been put to work as a navigable stream, a water supply and as a sewer. man's mar

cleveland has reached the fever pitch going into the day.s the greatest baseball festival of its kind. it happens only around the all- star. >> reporter: some of them are coming back for their seventh or eighth year but for others, it's the first time. >> it's indescribable. you have aspirations to be the all-star and win the world series and it's something to check off the list. >> reporter: it's about the fans and major league baseball said one of the goals is to increase accessibility to the game. >> more importantly, what you see is a lot of informal play and we want you to have fun. if you've dropped the ball or strike out, it's okay. the games are very hard but we want to make sure they come out and have fun and enjoy it. >> reporter: the mlb expects 250,000 fans will have come to cleveland to participate in all things baseball this week and today, for the big game. you can see security is very tight head of the parade with many of these streets blocked off by trucks. safety is important but everybody is expecting a lot of fun tonight.

cleveland is beautiful. the derby yesterday, but it's been a blast. >> you are in there at the media day which they had yesterday to get set for the game tonight. what stood out talking to the players? >> you know, the biggest thing to me is the generational change in baseball. you have a lot of bettering guys, mike trout, justin berliner, clayton kershaw, people have been here before. then you look at the rookies, rod junior, pete alonzo who would be to rookies who made it to the end of the home run derby. i think we talked about all the big performances in the derby in the past. eric judge in 2017, now you have these two rookies battling it out, rod junior broke the mlb home run record in a single round with 29 home runs. >> that was crazy. luckily it was sitting mostly to left field. >> they were catching the ball. >> the ball would be coming to us. that alonzo the one who wanted it, great season. that's a he makes a little over 550,000, a lot of money to just about everybody but not a professional athlet
