more of the talks we're joined in this here in the studio by our business correspondent clifford coonan and china expert clever what can we expect from these talks that didn't really get very far in the past well i think we're learning to expect the unexpected at this point. they didn't get very far it's been since may we haven't had any movement and i think what we're going to expect what we can expect is for them to get to know each other a little bit again at to set the parameters for their discussions but also to try and work their way through the sort of the political morass that we've seen surrounding it i mean we've had all these political statements and we've also seen all this evidence that it's affecting both economies now so this. stakes are extremely high at the same time these things are so bureaucratic and so torturous as we've seen i mean in the year of this now. that they're going to have to find a way to talk to each other 1st i think hundreds of billions of trade here are at stake indeed a high stakes game could or couldn't from did all the visions thanks so much through sudanes

policies didn't appear to have worked the way they were supposed to then clifford let's turn to you you've covered china for many years and we know for a fact that uncertainty over the trade war is one of the things that weighed on the economy what do you think these afresh growth figures will how do you think that they will impact a future u.s. china trade policy from here on when i think a lot depends on as we've just been saying that whether trump takes the blame so to speak for us and whether he's prepared to concede that the trade war is actually weighing on sentiment weighing on the u.s. economy we've seen that it's had an impact on the chinese economy because it's definitely slowing down a lot of that is down to the trade war so i think it becomes a question about how the 2 sides view the overall impact and how each side plays it out on whether the americans in particular see this as a factor in the economic growth. now they will have that meeting next week that meeting between the u.s. and china is negotiators in shanghai what do you think will happen well i think their meeting in shanghai which

our china expert clifford kernan is following these talks for us and joins us now good to see you clifford so we've got the negotiations cranking up again between beijing and washington they've been talking before without a lot of success is there a prospect of a deal coming out of these talks well we haven't had any contact official contact since may except for the g 20 at which they appeared to be coming close because trump and she made some small concessions very public concessions and i think that's indicative because it's a very political story so actually predicting whether there's going to be a deal or not is still very opaque and they've got a lot to they've got a lot of ground to cover the got a lot of ground to make up so i think we will wait and see i think we're going to see more it's going to be more about admin i think and sort of setting up things before we actually get a deal which should be further along the road so they're still working on process here but meanwhile we've got tariffs already in place covering 360000000000 dollars worth of goods a lot of money who's winnin
