my colleague, peter alexander, is with me, as well as criminal profiler clint van zandt.williams is also back with us now. pete, i want to start with you. i know you're just off the phone with your sources. what are you hearing? >> well, the three young people who reported seeing this -- and the map you're looking at -- what they thought is sort of at the very bottom right of that map, that's where they were at a residence hall, these science summer campers, high school students from the washington, d.c., area who were at a residence hall when they said they thought they saw this man carrying what they thought was a gun. they're 14 years old, we're told, and they've also told authorities that when they saw the man carrying what they thought was a gun, they couldn't be sure, they said, because they thought it was partly covered by a piece of cloth or some clothing. they say it was what they thought was a long-barreled gun with a short handle. so, that's a fairly specific description. but in any event, what they emphasized to the police, we are told, is they said we saw him

so, clint, what do you think about this one? credible would it be he may have passed a decade ago? >> i was in the fbi when this case was worked too. people really liked d.b. cooper. in fact, he really signed his name dan cooper, not d.b. some reporter got it wrong and the legend has continued. this was so long ago they have cigarette butts because the hijacker was smoking on board the aircraft. they have potential part fingerprints. they know somebody over washington state or portland he jumped out of the back of the plane never to be seen again. some people suggest there may still be a bar in rural oregon or washington state where d.b. co-oper and big foot sit around and have a drink and last about the investigation that's still ongoing. >> i guess the reason why they want a to crack it is it's the only unsolved plane hijacking that exists in our american histo history? >> absolutely. this has been a challenge for the fbi over the years. today it would be unfathomable we would give a hijacker money, pair surachute parachutes,

. >> joining me live now, former fbi profiler clint van zandt. april 13th was a long time ago.rt goes out to this family. >> it really does, alex. >> with regard to investigators, they say they have no reason to believe this guy is connected to the bobo case. so why do they want to interview him about it? >> one of the things you always have to do notwithstanding eliminate family members and those living nearby, find all the registered sex offenders in the area who have a history of committing any similar type of crime, and rule them in or rule them out based upon where were they at the time. in this case, holly bobo's disappearance. this guy, you indicated, alex, lived nearby. he disappeared from the area. the local authorities got a warrant for his arrest. marshals tracked him down and now want to know, where were you when she disappeared? they may not have anything to link him to the crime, but by background you want to know where he was the morning she disappeared? >> is it standard procedure to interview all sex offending suspects in case like this that live in the area is

. >> joining me now former fbi profiler, and msnbc contributor clint van zandt. is full of valleys and far west, they say the local terrain is inpredictable. how tough does it make fbi? >> it will be a challenge. there would be fbi agencies, forest rangers, state conservation officers, people who know the territory out there. with these three, i think they have a fantasized vision they'll remain on the run, the so-called gang of three that they are, but i think the area, law enforcement will be able to close in on them. all it's going to take is one tip from a camper, a hunter, somebody else that sees them, a vehicle, something like that. they may think they can go out in the woods and hide, but it will be short-lived. the only challenge is when the authorities go to arrest them, will they do the smart thing, which is surrender? or do the sum thing, which is try to shoot like they did at a deputy who chased them last week. >> you mentioned about this band of three. the fbi has been looking at their texts, different comments by family members. they do apparently t

we have to bring in clint van zandt, a former fbi profile others.tion that we've gathered so far, what do you make of this initially? >> when we see they threats against school, because we've found bomb-making materials, many of these threats are guess the very start first week or two of school, where the incidents are planned, so i think it's good that the authorities were able to illustrate fill this one, unfortunately across the country there may be young men and women who think about something like this. i think what's significant is what you just shared with us, the priority juvenile charge of carries a concealed weapon, changing the serial numbers, and it is drug possession will be significant. as you know, they found drug paraphernalia in his room that he had also, so this combination of his age, the drugs and whatever he head against his school in his plan to once again so many young men or women are not necessarily original thinkers. in his mind, when he starts talking about mass casualties, he's again thinks of some type of incident where

had been arrested for stealing a gun and his parents aren't trying to get help. >> clint, i'm sorry,bad connection with skype here today. it's sounding like bells are ringing here. we're going to work on that a little bit. they found a fuel source, they found shrapnel, plastic tubing. they said that this kid had everything he needed to make a serious pipe bomb. the officials say if he had pulled off what it seems like the investigation reveals he was planning, this could have had catastrophic consequences. and again, the investigators say that the plan was for him to kill some 32 victims, two principals, and again, he had a major marijuana growing operation as well. there will be a lot of questions about where his parents were in all of this, but this seems like a troubled kid that had multiple juvenile arrests including burglary, carrying a concealed weapons, altering serial numbers on a firearm, drug possession and so far all of those charges were dismissed or no was taken. again, he had been expelled from school and according to the reporter in the juvenile hearing yesterday, he s

clint van zant is a former fbi profiler and msnbc analyst. how in the world did they find him? >> this was good work by both the australians and the fbi. they were able to put this suspect together based upon part of a description provided by this 18-year-old victim this young teenage girl who was studying for final exams. somebody breaks into her house and straps a bomb around her neck. this takes us back to 2003 when we had brian wells in' ree, pennsylvania, the so-called pizza bomber that the fbi believed had some participation in a bank robbery and on national television that device blew up around his neck in. this particular case the device turned out to be fake. inside of the device the fbi has found a memory type device that they've gotten fingerprints off of. and between the description provided by the victim, tracing down a car they believe the suspect was driving, they were able to track him back to the united states. that's where an fbi swat team supported by two australia january officers were able to find this at his ex-wife's house. they hit the house. took him in
