clint as well as we are getting reports -- we don't have clint yet, but we will later. roger as well as james cavanaugh. former atf agent, from the reporting that you are hearing from michael and the possible links if this you tube account is indeed linked to one of the suspects, what's your reaction to that? are you there? >> i'm here. >> what would your reaction be to the report about a link to the you tube account showing international ties to militant groups here? >> it's important information for the commander who are handling the barricade situation that we are watching and the negotiators that are probably going to be dealing with him and may be talking with him right now. to have an idea of where they are coming from from the family members in the washington area maybe from his father and anybody who knew him and the carjack citizen and they will try to get a dialogue going with him and see what he is trying to do. when people get into the modes of they are going to blow up public places, they have a reason for it. it may not make sense to the rest of us, but it

back to you, clint. why not just flash that picture, whatever form it's in, whatever degree of resolution, and see if people don't find that guy or person? >> probably -- probably three words. olympic park bomber. when we think back to richard joule who was originally suggested as a potential suspect in that, atf and fbi and other agencies, we were in a foot race against the media trying to get the information. investigative report rs are out there talking to everybody, perhaps tainting the information before the investigators can get their hands on it. and, chris, you look at those pictures today. there was plus or minus 1,000 people outside of that courthouse wanting to see a glimpse of who the authorities were going to bring in. now, you don't want to have to deal with a crowd. if i was an fbi agent involved in this case, i wouldn't say a word to anybody in the media until i had my case put together, this guy in handcuffs and had him behind bars. i wouldn't -- >> let's go with this. >> i wouldn't ente

your thoughts, clint? >> they want to keep him alive. they have a number of choices tactically, chris. they could fire smoke into that boat, they could fire gas, they could use rubber bullets, they could put a net over the top. they could electrify it. they could do a lot of things to force him out. what we don't want right now is an officer to have to commit himself or herself over the top and go in that boat and have the subject, as you've just pointed out, detonate an ied. so we're going to try to either talk him out or force him out of that boat so we can get eyes on and see how much threat he presents to the officers around and how much of a threat he presents to himself and at the same time hopefully they will have a hostage negotiator there trying to talk to him, trying to give him a reason to give himself up and share his story as opposed to making a decision to do a suicide at this point. >> jim cavanaugh, you have to get in there and diffuse whatever is going on at the risk of your life. >> you know, this is a good place to be

as you start putting things together -- i think we may have lost clint -- clint, are you hearing me? >> yes, i am. >> as we put together all of these pieces, i know it is impossible for you to know exactly the direction in which it is going, but your sense of who these guys were, these brothers, one of which is dead, and the capacity for what they've not only done but could do, can they pull this off alone? because there's talk of accomplices. there's talk of looking to see if they may have had some sort of assistance. can they do this kind of carnage, just two men? >> well, the answer i think alex is yes. two men can build these devices. reaplize it was in 2011 that a former u.s. soldier built two exact similar devices based upon the plans he found on an al qaeda website. he built two bombs and he was going to use them against u.s. soldiers at ft. hood. the authorities stopped him before he did it. he was one man working under the inspiration he got from the magazine, buying all the parts locally. so one men, two men, could do this. but in this particular case, it looks like the inf

what does that tell us, if anything, clint? >> well, if in fact he's on the phone, there's a high likelihood he is talking to someone who may, who may have knowledge of what they are doing. it depends. now we know it's not our proverbial lone wolf. as you and i have talked the last couple of days, we said it would be easy for one, easier for two. we've got two, we understand how they could backpack the 20-pound devices in and out again. now if we can place them talking to somebody else and realize, now the authorities have had at least a day to try to isolate that phone call. we want to know everything about these guys. in fact, we'd like to have them in cuffs. short of that, by the time the fbi went public with those pictures today, they may know a lot about them, how they traveled, who they are talking to, and that net, that iron net is closing around these two guys faster than a school of fish out in the atlantic. >> let me ask you this, clint. the fact that he could possibly have been talking on the phone to someone else an

what do you make of that smoke and that -- can you tell -- clint was saying -- clint, you were saying that white smoke suggests not a state of the art or something super sophisticated in terms of explosive device. oh my god. there it goes again. your thoughts, michael. >> this just looks, unfortunately, so much like events we've seen in spain, in the uk, and obviously as we mentioned, oklahoma city many years ago. is it a terrorist attack? exactly who did it? exactly how many people are killed or injured? it's going to be hard to say. you can look at that picture and hear the terror. as clint also mentioned, the people who did this, part of what they wanted is public and potentially global attention. and in that respect, they timed this very well. >> remember we had two planes hit the world trade center and the second plane told us this is no accident. let's listen now, because that person who took that, perhaps the videocamera, took a very clear picture with very good sound on it. as you listen now, you'll be able to hear the two distinct explosions. one after the other. >> hey, ther

clint, can you pick up there? what changes now in terms of the law enforcement strategy for searching in the night hours? >> well, we've got something that the fugitive doesn't have, which is a night vision capability, al. so we're still going to have law enforcement on a heavy patrol. but he can use to cover his nightfall. he can slip and slide from house to house but we're going to have tactical teams out there with a night vision ability. we don't want to confront this guy in the night. we don't want him to have the advantage whatsoever. so law enforcement will keep a very night perimeter around the area where they think he is. they will still be looking at cars that go in and out and then tomorrow come daylight they are probably going to pick it up and do additional patrols in there. but al -- >> you know, clint van zandt and james clark and -- don clark and james cavanaugh, stand by. we'll bring you back later in the show. >>> just who are the suspects? we're learning much more about them on this extraordinar

former fbi analyst clint van zandt. good morning to you and thanks for being with us.e have you on camera which is fantastic. what do you make of the bomb part? we're getting some of those pictures right now. very simple things. the pressure cooker and other items. does it tell us whether it's domestic or foreign in origination at all? >> well, it changes our viewpoint, i think, richard. initially when these devices were described as small ieds, i think a lot of us thought as pipe bombs which very much have a domestic flair to it. now when we hear about these pressure cooker bombs, number one, we know that they've been used internationally, places like afghanistan and pakistan for 50 years. we know that one went off in india two months ago and killed and injured dozens, literally hundreds of people. we know that a u.s. soldier was convicted two years ago of assembling such devices that he was going to use to attack a restaurant where u.s. soldiers hung out. and we know that recently an addition of "inspire" magazine, the al qaeda magazine, had a formula, had a plan for

clint, what would you think would have caused such a dramatic shift?think there's a number of things we're probably going to find out in the 26-year-old brother's life, al. i think that he had a confrontation with a former girlfriend. she accused him of assault. he was arrested for that. that may have been the basis why he, unlike his brother, was denied citizenship. he was denied the opportunity to box for the united states in the olympics. i think there were a number of things in his life that really didn't go his way and like a cult in some cases or sometimes a religion or the way it's presented for others, there are individuals that will embrace you, bring you in, tell you you're a good person, give you an a philosophy on religion and then maybe turn you into a bomber. >> but when you look at this, brian, the fact is he was always -- his family was always muslim and like any religion you can have people that become extremist because obviously everyone in islam did not hold the same views if he heckled people in the mosque, they were certainly sayin

let me go to clint van zandt. he's standing by. clint, you know, you're an fbi profiler. a lot of this, the evidence, the technical things that are happening right now is it find out who could be responsible. and i was asking evan, the world has changed, for example, since the atlanta bombing. clint, you have cameras on every corner these days. is that the first source or one of the major sources for the investigation? >> yeah, well, they've got a lot going on. number one, they're trying to find out obviously who's responsible. could this be simply a -- i don't say simply, but could it be a lone wolf? that's going to be the challenge. if it's just one individual perhaps with no other type, group affiliation, whatsoever. is there any chatter on the internet that they've picked up? who claims responsibility for something like this? and, again, as you're suggesting, not only do we have government, state, investigative cameras, but we have all the participants, all the people watching. investigators will be trying to get ahold of their cameras, iphones, film, to try to see wh

i want to take a moment now to bring in former fbi profiler and nbc news analyst clint vanzant. i want to ask you about this incident in watertown first. we just heard what happened that we saw at least 100 law enforcement officers responding. and we know that over the course of the evening that they were from several different branches of law enforcement. that there was the fbi, there was local police and even the national guards we're seeing military there. what can we deduce. >> reporter: well, we're obviously waiting for confirmation from the fbi as to what they have. but as you've reported at about 11:00 p.m. last night, we know that a confrontation took place on the m.i.t. campus that an m.i.t. officer was shot multiple times and killed. some suggest it may have been a robbery. we know there have been multiple chases, either foot chases or car chases. we know that shots have been exchanged between subjects and police officers and no more in a situation like this especially following the bombing in boston in these areas normally we see crime go down. because of the heavy po

the united states, like clint said, we are going to find you. we have the fugitive finders, we've got the fbi, the police, the marshals. >> jim, you be first at putting this together. we're talking about the fbi announces within the last two hours that these are the only suspects, the only people of interest. the fact that they looked at this for a couple of days means that they think they did it. then you put together the calm arrogance of these people walking through people they are about to try to kill. put it together morally. put it together factually. they are standing there casually carrying bombs in their backpacks and they are going to use to kill the very people surrounding them there. and as i pointed out and all kinds of background of people, they are systematically, without any conscience, deciding to kill those people, as many of them, and blow off the legs of as many people as they can. they know exactly what they are doing. my hunch -- i'll just say this. could an american have that point of view? a normal american have a point o

let's start right now, let's go to clint. clint, you're so good at this kind of thing. what did you make of the new information today since we talked last? the fact that it was bbs, it was nails, it was apparently a pressure cooker. we know it was, perhaps, detonated with a circuit board. tell me what all that tells you in terms of domestic, foreign, individual, or group? >> no. i'm -- the degree of sophistication, number one, yesterday we were talking about small ieds. it sounded like pipe bombs, that, you know, by in large we see people build in the united states all the time. when we start to get into the area of these pressure cooker bombs, well, as you know, chris, for example, back in 1976, there was a hijacking of a plane flying from new york to chicago. croatian terrorists were on board. hijacked the plane, got up in the air and they said, by the way, we have a bomb and if you don't believe us, look in a locker in grand central station. the police looked, found the pressure cooker bomb. when they were trying to render it safe, the device went off. two months ago

clint, thanks very much for weighing in on this.et me ask you, in terms of this individual that we are focused on, do you expect that he is wi hiding out, injured from the gunshot wounds last night, or do you expect that he could what's your take on this? >> there's probably three different ways that this could go, at least. remember in that shoot-out last night, his brother was hit multiple times, to include fragments, perhaps, from some type of a grenade or incendiary device. so it stands to reason if his brother and he were both in a shoot-out and his brother was shot so many times, he may have been hit too. so law enforcement, as they look in this 20-block square area that save searched about 80% right now, they're looking for perhaps he's wounded and crawled under a house some place, perhaps he broke into either an empty house or he's in an apartment, holding hostages, or worst-case scenario, is that he was able to get his hands on a vehicle, maybe hijack a car and get out of that area before we knew about it. so these are all

clint? given the number of resources that we know are out there and they are at the house and checking everything that happened online. now they have evidence they are able to follow. >> the more i know about the person we are talking to, the more you know, the better job you can do. jim cavanaugh and i have been in situations where you are sitting there and talking to the subject and people are sticking notes in front of you as they gather more intelligence and more information. a negotiator is a fisherman and a fisherman has multiple psychological lores in his tackle box. we are trying to help this guy get on with his life. he may say i want to die, but that doesn't mean he has to die. if he does, he takes his message and every reason that he did this with him and no one will understand. if he wants to honor his brother's death and honor everything that he has done, he needs to explain it so the world understands. the negotiators and law enforcement want to give him a chance to share that

clint, let me ask you to pick that up, because obviously they did a thorough investigation.y said they didn't find anything. there are some restrictions on exactly how far they can go in a situation like this, clint. >> well, i've been involved in these international investigations at the request "of another nation and you always know they hold back on you. they never tell you 100% of the story but we don't either. that's just the game that is played in something like that. so the russians came, asked us to look into this background, we did, provided them some information. now it's time for a quid pro quo. we need to be able to through state, liaison to go back to russia and say, you know what, what was this guy doing those six months. i'm sure the russians know where he was, what he was doing, was he with the chech kneeians learning how to build bombs. it's time for them to man up and help us in the investigation if they want us to help them in the -- the challenge that the catch kneeians may present to him. >> that's the obvious place to go to find out about this six month

let's start here, clint.this point, where are federal investigators likely to focus their investigation to determine whether these brothers, in fact, acted alone? >> you have got some immediate things they have got to do and they have got some long term. we want to assure all the investigative agencies and especially the public in the boston area there are no more devices, nothing out there with a two-week timer sitting on it or anything like that that these guys might have set. not only did they built the pressure cooker bombs but told happened held ieds, pipe bombs. and find out if anybody in the area was supporting them in the activities, the investigations go on from there. where did they get the training? investigators in their own mind are comfortable that the 26-year-old was the leader, the 19-year-old was the follower. but where did the 26-year-old get his inspiration? not only what was the origin of it, but you did anybody else facilitate that, encourage him, pay him? all of these things are yet to b

clint van zant, fbi veteran profiler. what can you add, clint? >> well, as you know my background is as a hostage negotiator. having been in similar situations like this working with tactical teams, this is a hand in glove operation. the negotiator is on the scene. he or she will be working hard to extend a hand and allows this individual to come out. with the potential explosive device of something inside the best case scenario would be for the negotiator to get the subject to come over the side of the boat, crop to the ground so that the tactical team. anything like that. then they can close, make the arrest and then administer first aid. it's going to have to work like that. they are not going to endanger a police officer or agent in the arrest and have this guy try to blow himself up at the last second. >> we have been circumspect because there's been so much reported wrong over the past couple of days about passing things along. this does make sense though. boston globe is tweeting out that one of the photographers is in close enough to be a

i would like to go to clint at this time. clint, your predictions have proven to be true in this case, at least, as you have heard all of these developments, given your 25-plus years of experience as a law enforcement officer, what do you make of all of this? >> it's an active investigation the release of the photographs has proved to be what is very critical in this case, i think the fbi and other agencies had those pictures for about 24 hours. they tried very hard to identify those suspects themselves. they would have to identify the suspect, locate them in one place, conduct a surveillance and then make an arrest, the last thing they wanted to get involved in was a moving situation, a shooting situation, nonetheless, that has happened, that's the cards that have been dealt to law enforcement and that's what they're dealing with. and one question i have, i have seen photographs, pictures, videos tonight of at least one individual totally stripped of all of his clothing in custody of law enforcement and we have been told tha

>> do we have clint? >> number one, i think as jim and i have discussed, the older brother was probably the primary influence. he influenced his younger brother. this 19-year-old man now has lost that influence. he's lost that decision-making ability on the part of his older brother, so he's on his own. look, for all we know right now, three different things. he's either hiding in one of these houses, he's under a house and maybe he's bled to death because he got shot in the ch e shootout, too, or he was able to escape. if law enforcement closes that net tighter, they get through every house and every apartment and he's not there, that's going to be a new time to consider what we're doing. did we miss him? did he get away? and we also have to consider motive on this which is most important, and, you know, sometimes we look at the simplest motive and it makes no sense to us because it's almost chaotic. and it may be that these two young men were simply trying in their own terrible way to bring attention to

joining me now is former fbi profiler, clint van zandt.hanks for being here. >> good to be with you, al. >> what kind of information can we learn from photos like this? >> well, one of the things that the fbi will do is they'll take photographs of the actual blast area. they'll superimpose it over a photograph like you just showed us to try to suggest, did that blast actually originate from that bag or was it left, right or behind it? so we've got -- we've got a baseline of where the explosion took place. any other photographs will be compared against those two explosion sites, number one, to see if a bag had been there. number two, we'll be looking for someone who carried such a bag. remember, al, that the fbi describes two different black nylon bags. if you think about -- if you think about these pressure cookers, a friend of mine, larry johnson, former cia, commented that these would weigh about 20 pounds each. that's a lot of weight for somebody to carry in that area, al. >> now, what kind of damage can these type of bombs do, these pr

joining me now is clint van zandt. good morning. >> good morning. >> one of the things we learned about the pressure cooker bomb is that al-qaeda put directions for building one on its most recent edition of inspire magazine. they can also be found on the internet, but neither al-qaeda or any other organization has claimed responsibility. would that lead you to believe that is a lone wolf or disgruntled domestic suspect as opposed to an international terrorist? >> i think you have to keep all options open. it could be a hybrid. take for example in 2011, a former u.s. soldier was arrested in the area of ft. hood texas, the same area where major nadal hasan committed that terrible act on the military base. this young soldier was arrested because he was assembling two pressure cooker type devices that he was going to target on a u.s. military. the way he was arrested, the same gun store where major hasan bought one of his guns, noticed a large sale of black powder to this young man. they told the authorities, the authorit
