nbc analyst clint van zant is joining me with more on this. clint, how does this happen at what presumably is an extraordinarily secure facility outside the police barracks? >> this is interesting. and yet, alex, this is a point where troopers, police officers would feel relaxed, too. you feel you're within that green zone. and therefore you're safe. and whoever did this -- they need to develop, number one, of course, motive. why would somebody do this? was it personally directed against one of the two troopers, one shot and killed, one wounded? was it against the state police, law enforcement in general? these are the things they have to develop. but they're moving quickly. they're looking at the physical evidence. there's cameras outside the troop barracks. they could get pictures on those. there's tire tracks of the vehicle, of the person or persons who did this. there are shell casings. there are recovered rounds from the wounded officer. so there's a lot of physical evidence that they can gather very quickly. and of course they want to ge

former fbi profiler clint vanzant says that fact is also helping investigators build their case. >> most of the time when you have someone who looks like a sexual offender, drives a creepy vehicle, is lurking on streets, they have come to the attention of law enforcement a long time ago. but you get people like, for example, ted bundy, the infamous serial killer rapist. he was everybody's friend. he used to hang out at cop bars and listen in to see how the investigation goes. so there is not a physical profile necessarily or even an emotional profile that you can identify every offender. they can feel they are so far above reproach, they have gotten away with things so long, they really don't worry about being identified. >> when i asked vanzant what's next for the investigation, he said police and investigators will be looking closely at other missing persons cases in that region, and that includes the disappearance of a woman in orange, which is just outside charlottesville. that occurred in 2010. and the 2012 disappearance of a woman in charlottesville. they'll be looking for any link

. >>> clint vanzant joins me with a closer look at the suspect in this case.and this is something that came as a shock to a lot of people in the community. these two girls disappearinging and one found murdered are linked. how common is it for a suspect to appear five years after the fact and found linked to two people? one recent, one in the past? >> part of the challenge here, luke, is should this suspect be responsible for the current disappearance and the past death that we just talked about, there could easily be other victims in the same time frame. victims that haven't been linked. one of the rapes, this rape in 2005 took place 100 miles from charlottesville. so to begin authorities will have to take a compass and draw a circle around 100 miles away and look for the last 10 or 12 years at unsolved cases that this suspect could be responsible for. >> when i was in charlottesville, i would talk to the folks who knew mr. matthew, and he was sort of kribed in local reports also as a lenny from a mice of men figure. someone who is this gentle giant. not the
