can you describe why you went to clint and what you found there? describe your interviews with the children. >> basically, we went there monthlyon an almost basis, we are learning that children are dying and border patrol facility's all along the border. we are trying to figure out what exactly is going on down there. we sent a team of attorneys, doctors, interpreters to meet with the children and find out about the conditions in which they are being cap will stop you were not originally lending to go to the clint order facility outside of el paso, texas of because it is an adult facility in the facility historically has had a relatively small occupancy , maximum of 104. however, we received reports last week that children appear to be moving to this facility. what we did was we added it to our list of visits. when we got there on monday morning, we were immediately given a roster showing there were over 350 children at this facility. when we scanned of the roster, we were taken aback by the number of young children at the facility. there were over

we had all these reports about this facility in clint, texas. yesterday, we're told a bunch of children are moved out of there and today, reports some are back. just in terms of those terrible conditions people have been reading about the last couple of days, do you have a sense in the immediate moment right now, while all this plays out in washington, those conditions have improved? >> no, we don't. frankly, steve, transparency has always been the issue. where are the girls? where are the tender aged children, the refrains from one year ago because we couldn't get inside to see them. in my life i've only been inside one dhs facility where they were housing young boys, 10-17 and a border patrol processing station, the one i saw with my own eyes, young children separated from their parents in those cages sitting on floors on the mylar blankets. they don't let reporters in these facilities lightly and certainly not with cameras, be it video or still cameras. it is very unusual. we have gotten the reports from the settlement agreement going in and

and this is not happening in clint, texas, alone. the texas tribune says the conditions inside the nation's largest customs and border patrol processing center for migrants in mcallen, texas, also unsanitary and overcrowded. the paper reports migrants are sometimes, quote, forced to sleep outside a building where the water tastes like bleach. the new yorker found many of the children reported sleeping on concrete floors. they were given a blanket but some had to choose between sleeping on a blanket or sleeping under a blanket. the ap describes little kids that are so tired they were falling asleep on chairs. so to recap, children were left without a toothbrush, without a bed, they were left filthy, hungry, tired, and sick and forced to care for one another instead of being taken care of in a taxpayer funded facility. and ali, we should just point out, even for those hard line anti-immigration people, it is not like we're -- we're not spending money. $750 a day. >> is what it costs. >> is being designated, is what it costs, so clearly

i'm matt gutman in clint, texas. >> we appreciate matt there for that very descriptive overview. we see inside the facility? cameras are not allowed. matt went and he was among several reporters and journalists who were allowed to go inside. he was able to memorize things about what he saw there. as he mentioned, it's important to know those details. how are these children being treated? get that firsthand account for people and journalists who can hold the government accountable, because we know there have been some deplorable conditions inside there. >> right. that brings me back to, it almost feels like deja vu. remember last summer, both of us working down in washington, d.c. and it was last june that we were seeing the images and hearing that catch phrase at the time, kids in cages. at the same time, we were talking about family separations. there was such a large outcry then. fast forward a year later, we're getting those disturbing, heartwrenching, heartbreaking images. that father and daughter who drowned. as we're hearing about more deaths along the border. it just shows

border outside the facility in clint, texas, where these conditions are being described as horrific. what can you tell us, ed? >> reporter: well, this is one of the three locations that a group of lawyers and doctors and advocates toured last week and really brought to light these latest allegations and details of the conditions of the overcrowded, what they describe as unconscionable conditions, children who are essentially taking care of each other, sleeping on the floors, not having adequate showers and basic hygiene provided to them. cbp officials, customs and border protection officials have pushed back on some of the details that have been released by that group that toured these facilities or actually didn't tour the facilities, they interviewed various people who were inside. they weren't allowed to tour specifically inside the areas where these people were being kept. so, this was details being relayed to them by the people that they had interviewed. it has really brought out another round of outrage about what exactly is going on and how all of these people are being treate
