we still have clint watts with us. clint, to me, this also highlights how much more difficult this air lift is going to be as we get into the final days, as the pentagon starts to, in the term of art, retrograde the forces that have been conducting this air lift, protecting this airfield, to evacuate your rear guard, as it were seems even more dangerous than what they've been doing the last week or so. >> that's exactly right, garrett. from now until the last u.s. force are out, we're in a very precarious situation. admiral tsvaridis was talking about that on "morning joe," and he is absolutely right. we are one moment away from blackhawk down scenario. what we forget is while we hear terms like the taliban is taking control or taking over, they do not control all of kabul. they do not control all of afghanistan. there's many competing interests on the ground. since the u.s. showed up there last week, undoubtedly extremist groups that want to attack u.s. targets on the way out or foreign actors that might want to embra

clint watts to cover that. jack, let me start with you. now you're dealing with a known security, clearly a security problem there, getting folks that get cued up to get evacuated. what kind of military options is the president being offered by military advisers to finish the job here? is it more reinforcements, is it change in how we get folks inside the airport perimeter? what are the various options he is being handed by military advisers. >> typically what happens, chiefs will give him as many options as they can think of, including sending lots more troops to secure the area. accelerate the withdrawal with more planes and other people inside afghanistan. a wide variety of options from the ridiculous to sublime. and then they'll make a recommendation. recommendation is likely can't send more troops, that will make the final evacuation of troops much more difficult, but we'd like to see, joint chiefs talking, we'd like to see an extension of deadline of the 31st of august because we're not going to be able to get everybody out by then.

clint, let me start with you. believe at least one public relations firm is advising the taliban how to focus on key themes, much like corporate and political campaigns do across the world. are you surprised, clint, how savvy the taliban is online? >> no. i think we sometimes forget, mehdi, that the taliban, even going back 20 years was a very effective communicator inside afghanistan. separately, they've been working and sending out envoys for years to places like qatar to do negotiations. they've been behaving more like a state. they have scaling and organization. there's a distinct difference between what the taliban looks like and what you see from al qaeda or isis. they're using coordination. they definitely may be getting support, some professional services, but they're not the online mobs that you would see of al qaeda and isis because their content really isn't that engaging, not in the way we used to think of most extremist groups. >> clint, i have to ask, you worked for the fbi, you worked counterterrori

but the reality is as clint said, the taliban is not totally unified and cohesive. you may have some people in the taliban who are focused on getting international recognition, who are focused on getting international assistance and that may give you some leverage to moderate their behavior. but then you have some people that want to engage in reprisal violence and attack people who worked with the united states and who may have ties with the extremists who carried out these types of attacks so this is an evolving situation. i think the u.s. will separate out we have our counterterrorism issue. we'll go after who we need to go after. we can do it as we've done in other countries. then we have to explore and test what the taliban is going to be like going forward. >> absolutely. we manage, i think, to get osama bin laden and, you know, in quite difficult circumstances when we were determined to do it, we do it and our enemies ought to know that. ben rhodes, thank you, yamiche alcindor, thank you. clint watts, thank you. >>> there were already calls from the usual war

clint, talk people through what they need to know about isis-k and the taliban. these two terrorist organizations far from being affiliated with one another. >> that's right brian, there is some confusion on other broadcast so that was listening to today. the taliban sheltered al-qaeda, osama bin laden's al-qaeda, which led to the 9/11 attacks. but going back about five or six years ago, the islamic state, then known as isis, began to break away from al-qaeda. this was a iraq and syria. but they also had a network of terrorist groups, which corresponds with the afghanistan, pakistan region. which was then a splinter and a talent challenger to al-qaeda. by extension, that makes them a challenger to the taliban. so to think of isis-k, they are younger generally, they are more about violence first and ideas second, and they are trying to create their own separate independent state. separately, al-qaeda is kind of scene as the older generation. they are more moderate by isis stands, which may seem crazy to us after the 9/11 era. but they also see the taliban as very

let me pick up if i can, clint, where jim left off. as we said before the fbi is sending negotiators to the scene. so many questions i have including what are the chances they have eyes on his hands and whether or not that detonator switch. how important is it for them to be able to run plates, figure out who this guy is, how quickly can they do a check on him. give us a sense of how quickly this can unfold for them being best able to talk this guy down? >> some changes they have include the fact that they are in washington dc. and this is central to a lot of the apparatus of the fbi and the local police. separately there are more cameras than other if is around the country. so they can pick up on it and make news. the big thing they're trying to figure out is is this person acting alone? this could be part of something bigger. we saw people placing bombs, we saw an insurrection at the capital. it looks to be, you know, a loan actor but i would assume they want to confirm that. and the next part is is it tied to any sort of treatment?

organization that i certainly would have any sense of confidence or trust in. >> we're out of time, clintwant to ask you finally as we watch more planes go off as we have been on the air and think about the american service members who are looking at the folks going in and making sure they're people that should get on the planes, do you think the bigger threat in terms of taliban and security they're providing outside the airport are people who as general ma -- mackenzie said may not be sympathetic, may want someone like isis-k to get through? >> i agree, chris. the loyalty question is definitely in play. also these fighters that come in from the taliban, this is not their home turf. they have been out in other parts of the country. to think they're going to be there, be able to establish security, know what's going onto know who is an isis-k member that's trying to slip into the perimeter, you just can't count on that. they have not been there. this is not like bagram air force base for the americans. >> our thoughts and prayers are with those folks on the front lines all day long today,

clint, as i welcome you to this disturbing discussion, these officers made direct references to donaldmotivating factor, having cited what they were being told by the insurrectionists, by those rioters. it remains to be seen whether republicans will resist subpoenas, but is there any other way for this committee to get evidence on what republicans did or didn't do? maybe -- is there electronic evidence? how else can the house get evidence on what was behind it. >> many of the folks are coming through the plea process. some are being released from jail. i think there is two ways that that could actually sort of illuminate. one, those that are pleading to lower or lesser charges and then cooperating court part of a larger conspiracy, specifically, the stop the steal rally the night and day before and then that morning that was out on the lawn. when you listen to some of the testimony that came out this week you realize they were determined to get into the capitol. there was no question about that. this wasn't just a peaceful protest at the capitol. they wanted to breach night uh-huh. >>

thanks. >> and clint watts, i know you're standing by. they know who he is and they know according to pete williams something of a criminal record in the past and we don't know details on that. they said according to pete that he was antigovernment in his affect and from north carolina. what are they trying to do now in terms of figuring out how best to negotiate with him? >> andrea, i think some of the good news is they do know a significant amount about this individual this gives ability to negotiate something else and it's very difficult if you don't know anything else about the person to try to engage them in a way to de-escalate. if you know that this person has government views you can start to address those and try to build some sort of a bridge to de-escalate the situation. separately, though, we need to be asking why did he pick today? is this just a random act or i'm sure the fbi is very focused right now on if it is an anti-government view, is this part of a larger collective group in north carolina or elsewhere that's watching

i'm like, "dad, i don't have to be clint eastwood.ing to be clint eastwood, i'm just saying i want to do this with my life once he observed my passion and my enthusiasm, i just think he was worried i wasn't going to be able to pay my bills >> seth: where -- what was the first pay-my-bills job where they thought, "okay, enough of these have happened, he's going to be okay?" >> well, for my father, it wasn't until i was in a successful western i mean "magnificent seven," i was 44 before my dad was like, "all right, all right, you're in "mag seven," all right, that was a good movie i saw that, i think you're working. and my mother, strangely, they really were the invert when i was younger, she was super supportive of the idea, you know >> seth: yeah. >> of going into the arts. she was this very -- you know when i first tried writing, she would be like, “you're no chekhov, you know, i mean it is okay, but just so you know, it is not as good as it could be.” i mean that's -- i think she thinks she is giving me drive and i don't know if tha

clint watts. clint, what do we know about the suspect and his motives at this point? >> zerlina, he's a pretty interesting character. you can tell from watching the footage that it was a mix of political grievances, specifically in that livestream talked about president joe biden many times. he seemed to be talking about it, not being a political issue but talking about nancy pelosi and the president. clearly, he picked this location for a reason. the other point is that it speaks to the power of the insurrection. many months later, this is not a second it incident around the -- this becomes a magnet essentially for people who have anti government views. that's clearly what he. had separately, the one you could also seemed to tell from his rhetoric and when he was talking about was that he was a troubled individual. he clearly is under a lot of stress. talked quite a bit about getting back and speaking with his family. his thoughts were often rambling and incoherent. so he's under some sort of mental stress, he did not have an actual device even though he was making l

clint, what do we need to understand about isis-k?most important part is that they are one of the remnants after the islamic state, as we knew in syria and iraq, actually stuck around, and if anything, maybe grew a little bit. this is going back to about 2017, '18 as the islamic state was being pushed out of mosul and into syria and ultimately being dwindled in syria. what we also need to know is that they have many enemies, meaning, yes, they want to harm the united states, but they also want to harm the taliban, but it's a very fluid and dynamic space in terms of these extremist groups. in afghanistan and particularly with isis-k, many of the members are former taliban, particularly from the pakistan side. this is a chaotic stew. allegiances vary. and there are different generations there. al qaeda is more the older generation of what we know from 9/11. isis-k is much younger. and by being much more young, they are also more violent. >> air strikes from the u.s. and afghan governments have killed more than 2,000 civilians over the p

clint, let's do what you do best, and that is threat assessment.ell us what you know about this new isis k that were just starting to hear about. it sounds like a fat burning dietary substitute, you see on instagram. it is indeed very serious business, biden is worried about them attacking the, airport are the taliban worried about them and other sub terrorist groups? within their nation because after all their some point they have to join would is join the community of nations. >> that's right brian, when we think about the taliban versus the u.s., we're looking at two parties that have a shared interest in the u.s. leaving. that's why we are seeing basically some peaceful negotiations at this point with the taliban playing somewhat nice particularly by taliban standards. the wild card on all of this is isis. when we heard of isis, the islamic state picking up in syria and iraq, which you see is affiliates branch out around the world, very similar to the way al-qaeda, or isis in afghanistan was one of those stronger ones, that emerged at the time

joining me now is clint watts.s on a lot of these things particularly in the digital space. after we saw the incident yesterday, it was a bulletin of this, and we have a situation in afghanistan where there is fear of the rise of international thunderstorm and a domestic threat. what concerns you? what is concerning to us right now? >> chuck, absolutely. it is domestic extremism at this point. if you went out today on social media you would see calls for anti-mask protests, anti-vaccine protests. people being told they have to get a vaccine mandate or a mask mandate. this is the third incident that we have even at the capital just this year. this is really the tipping point as we head into fall. part of the reason we didn't see mass shootings or mass attacks last year. that dynamic is changing and we have intense political partisanship and you have elected officials like mo brooks last night seems like they're denying that this is siding wit. >> it is a surprise. and i want to make a comparison to what bernie sande

joining us now clint watts, former consultant to the fbi counterterrorism division and msnbc nationaln levinson, a reporter and producer for oregon public broadcasting who was on the ground in portland in the middle of it all yesterday. jonathan, i want to start with you before we get into these longer-term big picture questions. just give us a picture of what happened this weekend in portland. >> there was a rally on the outskirts of the city. the proud boys were branding it as the summer of love. counterprotesters showed up and they moved throughout multiple blocks of the city. exchanged volleys of mace and paint balls. one reporter was thrown to the ground. her phone was smashed. the proud boys trapped one man in his truck, destroyed the vehicle, maced him, physically beat him. it was very violent over the course of about an hour and there was no police intervention. >> i want to ask you about that because there were questions in portland yesterday. they appeared to take a more hands-off approach with the exception of the firearms arrest that we mentioned. was it a concerted strate

clint, i want to bring you in. we have seen crowds for days gathered around this airport. it is obviously a difficult situation to control. cia director was on msnbc earlier and said it was a, quote, nightmare scenario from a security standpoint. what do you think? >> yeah, he's exactly right. look, we don't control the perimeter in the way we might have controlled other military bases inside afghanistan. bagram air force base, we would own the security apparatus. we would know who is mounting and actually doing it. we have better technology. so from that standpoint, we don't control the ground in kabul anymore. separately you have major choke points here. we have masses of people. we're not just talking about a line of people. we have masses of people. and as the perimeter gets extended it pushes those masses of people out and this was struck with devastating effect. i think this will be even more difficult for them to manage as they try in the next five days, if they stick with the time line, they will have even less force to maneuver and try and control this area on the
