someone who has written extensively about our country's ability to reckon with it is clint smith.icting emotions. i have seen a lot of black people posting funny things today about the fact that we are going to be doing this. the celebration is about the end of slavery, but it also commemorates just our ugly past. what's the right way to celebrate this new federal holiday? >> yeah, i think what we have to do is hold that this is a holiday in which we mourn the fact freedom was intentionally kept from black people in texas for over 2 1/2 years after the emancipation proclamation and two months after general lee surrendered. we mourn who was kept from black people. we celebrate the end of one of the most egregious things. we have to hold that realities at once. part of what i think about is how slavery existed for 250 years. black people have been fighting against the institution of slavery since the day they arrived on these shores. the vast majority of people who fought against slavery, who fought for freedom, for emancipation, never got a chance to see it for themselves. they fou

clint smith joins me with his best-seller, "how the word is passed." how does the word matter?oximity in this country. we talk about slavery as if it happened in the jurassic era, with the flintstones and then slavery. but it was not that long ago. i talk all the time about how the woman who opened the national museum of african-american history and culture alongside the obama family in 2016 was the daughter of an enslaved person. my grandfather's grandfather was enslaved. this institution existed for 250 years and it's only not existed for 150. so the idea it would have nothing to do with the landscape of inequality is not true because there are people today who were in community with people who were born into generational bondage. and that system that was not that long ago has shaped our political infrastructure in profound and unsettling ways. >> as part of writing the book, you visited eight cities crucial to slavery in this country. what did you learn? >> part of it originated in 2017 when i saw the statues of confederate leaders come down in our hometown of new orleans. i
