joining us now is investigative reporter for nbc 4 washington, scott macfarlane, and clint watts is stills judge that seems to not be buying it. >> really the most fascinating case so far, not just because a notorious defendant but because of what's been filed over the last few days. he technically pleaded not guilty during an arraignment today. that's what happened on the legal side. but what's most interesting is what happened before in the court filings. doug jensen is seeking to get released from jail pending trial and making some unique arguments. this court filing references george or well's "1984," referencing how unexpected it was that a reality show host, a billionaire reality show host would become president. but then he appears to turn on trump, saying he went there that day, did what he did that day because he thought it was at the instruction of donald trump, then says he felt deceived by the pack of lies. another note, nicole, the attorneys in the case today say plea talks have kind of gone off the rails. that's noteworthy because doug jensen says he is languishing in jail,

clint watts, i start with you.. i've kind of been waiting for this to happen, which is, there's been significant overlap between president trump's supporters and law enforcement, president trump's supporters and military, we've seen them all show up at the capitol at different points. we're now getting to that point, i think, with the legal process where we're starting to see the buildout of conspiracy cases, both in this new one out of chicago and in the one with the three percenters last night. i'm curious to see if there will also be parallel conspiracy charges related to the oath keepers who were, quite frankly, much more overt and obvious on the day of january 6th, as well as the proud boys. several of the videos of the proud boys show them with different kinds of gear, smashing in windows. they had shown up prolifically at protests back in december, the month prior. so i would expect that all of these cases now, all of them now moving to the court, you're starting to have different witnesses flip, and you're

clint watts, the director was defending the fbi but also saying we could have done a better job. what is your take away from those comments. there was rank and file they never got this information. >> the senate report was quite revealing. it points to two problems out there. on the capitol hill police side, how do they manage their intelligence and assess early warning and develop a structure. they didn't have that intelligence led structure you would see in a lot of larger police departments. they didn't know how to pass it through and prepare. separately -- and it was vague in the report -- what do we want the fbi and department of homeland security to prevent this? will we allow them to look at social media posts available in the open to make an assessment or judgment. the report leaves us wanting. it doesn't clearly articulate what needs to be done. i am sure from the fbi perspective, any reports that came in were from president trump supporters. if it had gone around that president trump supporters would be rallying at the capitol, what do you think that would be? fbi is sp

i want to bring in clint watts, research fellow at the foreign policy research institute and an msnbcnalyst and contribute. good to see you guys. ken, this report adds new scrutiny of the current acting police chief who, as i think most people know, was named to the post after the prior chief was forced to resign the day after. walk us through some of the key revelations here. >> that's right, chris. rohan pittman was in charge of the three intelligence branches in the months prior to the january 6th event and those branches come into serious criticism in this report as having received significant intelligence information about people wanting to bring guns to the capitol and people sharing maps of the capitol tunnels online but failing to pass that information up the chain to senior leadership and down the chain to the rank and file officers who turned out to be unprepared on the day. and it's just one example of how this report says there was a massive intelligence failure where it wasn't just the capitol police but the fbi and dhs also had access to this information and did not dist

contributor and former republican congressman david jolly is here plus national security analyst clint watts who worked as a consultant to the fbi's counterterrorism division is also here. eugene, first, share with us what you're hearing about what was behind today's announcement. there was some -- it felt like there was growing pressure on the speaker from democrats and republicans to do something, to get the subpoenas flying, to get some records preserved, to begin any kind of investigation. but she seemed very mixed, to be holding out hope for something more bipartisan. >> and she seemed disappointed, right? something we hear from democrats because they were really hoping they could get something that had the gravitas and validation and something without lawmakers truly bipartisan to look at what happened here. and so that's exactly what we're hearing. and they are still holding out hope surprisingly despite everything that we've seen that at some point a real committee, a real 9/11-style commission could be formed. and until that point there's going to be all these other investigations.

"propublica" obtained new details about the trump white house's knowledge of the gathering storm. after interviewing more than 50 people involved in the events of january 6th and reviewing months of private correspondence, taken together these accounts suggest that senior trump aides had been warned the january 6th events could turn chaotic with tens of thousands of people potentially overwhelming ill-prepared law enforcement officials. rather than trying to halt the march, trump and his allies accommodated its leaders, according to text messages and interviews with republican operatives and officials. you know, clint, the more information we get, the clearer it
